"Bismack Backlash: In wake of shaky Euro workout, Biyombo now offering to work out for few teams in the US – Pistons & Knicks both got calls"
It must have been an incredible blow to the system of Biyombo’s handlers that someone who could play 16 minutes off the bench of a cash-strapped Spanish league club for 14 games could possibly get shut down by the invisible man. They wanted to hide their boy and the fact that he struggles to catch the ball, can’t put it through the hoop, and has this thing where he fouls people quite often while allowing the basketball stupid to compare him to Ben Wallace and Dwight Howard. The problem is that if Biyombo cannot look good in a fixed setting run by his own people that he had been preparing for since he walked out of Fuenlabrada, what makes them believe he will fare better in a less controlled environment?
I honestly believe dropping into the second half of the first round would do his career prospects well. Tyson Chandler wasn’t "NBA Champion and best center in Dallas history Tyson Chandler" when he was without Dirk, Kidd, Terry, Barea and Marion. Serge Ibaka wouldn’t be "future star despite getting worked over by Pau Gasol, Zach Randolph, and Dirk Nowizki in the playoffs the past two years" without Kevin Durant. Joakim Noah and Taj Gibson wouldn’t be who they are without Derrick Rose. Theo Ratliff was his best with Allen Iverson.

GottaBeTheShoesParticipantHe just needs the right work ethic and he must want to be great or will just be another bust.. He is starting to remind me of hasheem thabeet which isn’t a good thing at all.
0 - Posted on: Thu, 06/16/2011 - 6:12am #545820
GottaBeTheShoesParticipantI watched some of his workout and he just did a bunch easy things with no defense on him.. And there is still that age issue.. With such a high ceiling with little to show for it he may be the biggest risk in this draft because of his age issue. If his age is 23 or higher I doubt he will be drafted at all.
0 - Posted on: Thu, 06/16/2011 - 7:34am #545852
PulseGlazerParticipantNo one respectable thinks he’s older than 20. And if he’s NBA Defense ready now, which, again, everyone is saying, he’s a 15-20 pick. Of course, everyone said the same about Thabeet…
0 - Posted on: Thu, 06/16/2011 - 7:37am #545854
cward23ParticipantFrom what ive read he didn’t hurt his self in workouts because teams already knew that he had zero offense so it wasn’t a surprise. He is gonna get drafted off of what he can do on defense which is why he is being compared to Big Ben.
0 - Posted on: Thu, 06/16/2011 - 7:42am #545859
mosdefParticipantI see more Thabeet then Ibaka. The thing you have to realize with his good games is that he did his good stats against weak competition.
Nike Hoops Summit? highschool seniors and only 2 people were 69 on that roster, but Biyombo was still 30lbs heavier then the USA players.
Senior Spain League – his good games were against teams that lacked height. When he went against tall teams, like Rubio’s Regal Barcelona he got shut down with 2pts and 3 rebs. Why? Cuz Navarro, Fran Vazquez and Terrence Morris are all over 69.
Even with his 77 wingspan, he struggles with height. He has hands of brick and very limited offensive game. He can dunk, but so can everyone in the NBA. That doesnt mean you are good. Make him go against Duncan, Dirk, Dwight, Milsap, Blake Griffin, and Im sure he will be exposed alot in the NBA. He cant bully people in the NBA like he did in certain games in Europe

fredrock34Participantwhen scouts talk about this kid one of the first things that comes up is his work ethic, how he is a gym rat that wants to be great. Anyone that has read anything about this kids background knows that this kid is a Winner. I wouldnt compare him to Thabeet because thabeet has been lazy since his days back in Uconn. Jim Calhun used to say all the time how he had to push Thabeet hard at first cause he had no work ethic. And the reason why people keep questioning his age is because he is so mature for his age, but who wouldn’t be, his the oldest of 7 brothers and sisters and was force to be a man by time that most of us are coming out of 4th grade. If this kid turns out to be a Bust it wont be for lack of effort. If he ends up playing for a defensive minded coach he will be a successfull NBA player.

BothTeamsPlayedHardParticipant"With such a high ceiling with little to show for it he may be the biggest risk in this draft because of his age issue."
The ceiling isn’t high. He isn’t going to magically go from horrible hands and no offensive game to Dwight Howard. That is not going to happen. The hope that one can have is that he will learn to play defense (not just block shots to appease the stupid who that is the entirety of defense in the NBA), cut down on the fouls (something Amir Johnson never has), and just not kill them by dropping wide open dump off passes that hit him right in the hands (ala Omer Asik). I have no problem with anyone being excited about Biyombo if they just say that they want Ekpe Udoh 2.0. He will be big, try hard, block a few shots. That is fine, but he need to be protected by his coach against bigger, stronger, and more skilled players. Even then, he’ll still be a negative on offense and limited in his minutes because of excessive fouling. If that gets you excited, if that is what the Biyombo bandwagon is all about, then I’m cool with it. That isn’t what it is about.
"how he is a gym rat that wants to be great."
Does the desire to be great include catching passes and making seven foot shots in a 1-on-0 setting? He had more than a month to work on that.
"Anyone that has read anything about this kids background knows that this kid is a Winner."
What part of walking out on his team to play in a high school All-Star game and then going to court in order to avoid playing again to avoid exposing his flaws before the draft speak to this "winner" persona?
"If this kid turns out to be a Bust it wont be for lack of effort."
Yes, it will because he has no offensive skills, can’t catch passes, and cannot avoid committing fouls and putting himself out of position when trying to block shots. That is the bust potential of Biyombo, not the age or effort. The higher he goes and the higher slotted pay he gets, the less likely it is that the team who drafts him will be patient if he struggles early on. Hasheem Thabeet was out of Memphis in a year-and-a-half not because he is without potential, it was because he was an expensive project. The same can be said of Earl Clark and Alexis Ajinca. If Biyombo learns that there is more to defense than trying to block shots, if he learns to avoid fouling, and if he learns to catch the ball when a pass hits him in the hands, then he can have a long career. Not that of Dwight Howard or Ben Wallace, but long nonetheless.

cward23Participant^^ i have to agree he doesn’t have a very high ceiling. He could become a good defensive player but you never see a guy as bad on offense become a offensive threat in their career. He has unlimited potential as a defensive player ( according to scouts) but not as a all around player (Ben Wallace seems to be his ceiling)
0 - Posted on: Thu, 06/16/2011 - 10:16am #545933

BothTeamsPlayedHardParticipantBen Wallace never had problems with fouling, and the guy was not just a shot blocker. The guy was a great positional defender who was always among the league’s leaders in charges drawn in addition to being an elite shot blocker. Even then, even with a completely developed defensive game, he still needed to have Chauncey Billups, Rip Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince, and Rasheed Wallace around him to handle to offensive load that came as part of the Ben Wallace package. His legendary status died in Chicago when Billups, Hamilton, Prince, and Rasheed became Duhon, Gordon, Deng, and Nocioni. He didn’t get old overnight, the situation in Chicago exposed his flaws more.
0 - Posted on: Thu, 06/16/2011 - 10:53am #545953

OhCanada-ParticipantAmir Johnson cut down on fouls drastically this year. His minutes went up by 10 and his fouls only went up by .5. Although he does not seem to rebound quite as well as he used to, defend, or stay aggressive. THat maybe the payment setting in as well, or just the fact that Toronto is not nearly as competitive as it was in Amirs first year.
0 - Posted on: Thu, 06/16/2011 - 11:09am #545959

OhCanada-ParticipantIve said it before Ill say it again. He is a Joel Anthony clone. That is still very good for this draft and should warrant a mid to late 1st round pick, especially with the "potential" factor.
0 - Posted on: Thu, 06/16/2011 - 11:35am #545965
ryan27ParticipantWhere did you guys get the idea that Ben Wallace was a mediocre player? True, he didnt play well in Chicago but the guys was a 4 time defensive player of the year and was without a doubt one of the best defenders in NBA history. If Biyombo’s absolute ceiling is Ben Wallace, that is pretty f-ing good.
What part of walking out on his team to play in a high school All-Star game and then going to court in order to avoid playing again to avoid exposing his flaws before the draft speak to this "winner" persona?
Just to respond to this, I seem to remember the issue was that his team wasnt paying him (as some Euro teams have a bad habit of doing). Cant really blame a guy for quiting that.

"– Some of you have asked me what’s the significance of FIBA not clearing Bismack Biyombo to sign an NBA contract. It’s about money and leverage. That Spanish team doesn’t mind losing Biyombo to the Charlotte Bobcats, but they want every bit of a buyout of about $1.4 million to release him.
The Spanish Federation and, by extension, FIBA is backing the team. So Biyombo and the Bobcats will eventually have to pay up to get this resolved."

Tongue-Out-Like-23ParticipantFor you to continue to say that he’s not Dwight Howard is just ridiculous to me.
Nobody, AT ALL, has compared this kid to Dwight Howard. At all. And so what if he’s not the next Dwight Howard? Nobody else in the league is. And so what if he’s not the next Ben Wallace, a 4x-Defensive Player of the Year. The dude may just be your average good defensive center.
Both of the players you’re mentioning him with are legendary once in a decade type of players. So what if he doesn’t reach that? It’s ridiculous to expect somebody to be a 4xDPOY before they enter the league. If he becomes atleast a good defender and rebounder in the league, he did his part to serve his team.
Just quit bashing him because you believe he’s not the next Ben Wallace or Dwight Howard. Nobody else in the league is.

iguapops420ParticipantHe’s probably going to end up closer to a Theo Ratliff than a Ben Wallace when all is said and done.
That is unless he’s simply a more athletic Etan Thomas or like OhCanada said,Joel Anthony.
At times I kinda see Emeka Okafor when he played for Char.
Just not enough in game footage to make a real comparison IMO. Not on of us really know enough about him, but one he def aint no Dwight Howard(which I’ve never seen him compared to in th first place) or Big Ben.
On a side note, as much as I hate them, I would have loved to see Biyambo fall to Boston just to see what kind of career he could have had learning about dedication/heart/hustl from the C’s vets.

BothTeamsPlayedHardParticipant"Chief among them was Biyombo, who exploited his 7-7 wingspan and the most NBA-ready body on the floor. After a disappointing first quarter, the visitors adapted as Biyombo asserted himself defensively and Polish guard Mateusz Ponitka (who scored a team-leading 17 points) attacked the basket. ‘He runs the floor, he defends and he’s cat-quick,’ said an NBA scout of Biyombo. ‘His offensive skills need to be developed, but his athleticism screams out.’
‘He’s Ben Wallace, basically,’ said another NBA executive."

Biyombo will be a gritty player and a fierce defensive presence, but don’t expect him to score double-digit points. He’s been compared to Joel Anthony and DraftExpress writes that in a best-case scenario he may resemble "a 6’9" Dwight Howard."

BothTeamsPlayedHardParticipantNot to mention there is a thread on this site entitled, "Bismack Biyombo = Ben Wallace" so these absurd comparisons over a 14-game playing raw, foul prone, turnover prone backup shotblocking quitter who was only elevated to the ACB because of the need to sell off Esteban Batista exist. And now he is on a team with a roster that makes the Minnesota Timberwolves look like the Miami Heat. Because the lottery needs of a team like Charlotte were clearly someone who at best is a one way player. The poor people of Charlotte better hope the top pick in the 2012 Draft is worth the 60+ loss season they are in for.

BothTeamsPlayedHardParticipantNo, I acknowledge the existence of the nonsense.
All you have to do is scroll up to see that I have no problem if Biyombo if all a person expects is a Ekpe Udoh-type player (obviously Biyombo is even less polished offensively). It isn’t going to mean a thing for a team as bad as Charlotte will be, and the hope for Charlotte’s 2011 Draft is that the team is bad enough so that the 2012 and 2013 drafts get them real lottery talents.
The nonsense that came about after the Nike Hoop Summit should have set up huge red flags. He quit on his team. After which, he ran and hid out. That isn’t an opinion, it is a fact. FIBA made that clear when they declared he has to pay Fuenlabrada the buyout.

BothTeamsPlayedHardParticipantThis is a great day for clubs that feel a player quitting on his team in order to play in a meaningless high school all-star game does not constitute a breach on contract on their part.
Biyombo’s handlers have to be fired, right? I tend to believe Rich Cho should as well, but I’ll hold off on that one until he throws money at comeback kid Saer Sene next July.
Sene vs. Majok… bad basketball at its best.
