llperezFirst his height. He was listed at 5-9 his junior year at Washington and many including myself thought that was favorable and he would be closer to 5-8. However he measured out at a legit 5-10 1/4 improving his stock immensely. He then lit up the athletic testing Putting in a 40″ vert passed only by 2 guys. He then was dominant at the shooting drills finishing first in college 3’s and second in NBA 3’s and second in 15-18 foot jumpers behind only Andrew goudelock in both. He finished top 5 in the entire camp in both lane agility and 3/4 court sprint. He also finished top half of bench press hitting 185 13 times.
So did a guy who was one of the best players in America last season solidify himself at least a second round pick by dominating at the combine?

ilike.panochasParticipantI like him in the 2nd round. The guy is tough, athletic and he is strong for a 5’9-5’10 guard. Probably the fastest player in this draft.

BKKnicksfanParticipantI wonder who would take him? That my thing. I like his skills, I just wonder what team would be a good fit for him? Charlotte? Los Angeles? Denver?

Memphis MadnessParticipantCould turn into Kyle Lowry with more upside, a better shot, and better hops.
Any chance the Heat take him? If he pans out the Heat will be unstoppable.0 - Posted on: Sun, 05/29/2011 - 5:46pm #537660

ilike.panochasParticipantMore upside than Lowry? Lowry has made himself a legit NBA starting PG, I dont think Thomas can become that or has that kind of potential.

jazz270ParticipantWho helped themselves more?
Kanter, Jimmer, Norris Cole and Iman Shumpert.
Thomas is an exciting player, but measuring an inch taller when you’re already under six foot…..Yawn. I do like the kid, however.

I May Be WrongParticipantfor some reason, I see him putting up similar numbers to Telfiar when he was getting some playing time. Of course, that is contingent on his work ethic … but the Bobcats would be my first guess but if he slips past them in the second round I think ATL could use him along with Teague. Kirk is still there for a season and Teague looks like their PG of the future but he’d bring some valuable minutes if Kirk decides to leave after next season

HotSnotParticipantMany doubted if Ty Lawson had what it took… he seems to have worked out ok.

M-DYMESParticipantBenson also really increased his draft prospects via combine/testing/workouts.

JaeEvolutionParticipantHe’d be a perfect backup for the Hawks, that is if the coaching staff decides to actually get him minutes. Jeff Teague rotted on the bench and after 2 years finally got his chance and showed he was the truth, but I really like him and he would be a steal for us.

kobyzParticipanthe’s like Jonney Flynn, only couple of inches shorter

surveParticipantI hope his combine results helped him out, but either way, this guy is really slept on I think. He will be a good guard for any team.

omphalosParticipantThe real question is did anyone help Isaiah Thomas more than J.J. Barea did by forcibly reminding the basketball world how devastating a skilled little man can be.

B-ball fanParticipantI think with him probably going in the 2nd round, whichever team that takes him will not do so out of need specifically. Most teams don’t draft 2nd rounders for the express purpose of short term relief or even with an expectation of that player getting playing time in the short term. We can speculate what teams would be a good fit, but that doesn’t men those teams are necessarily any more likely to pick him.

sheltwon3ParticipantI think thomas can have a kind of role like Barea by being that quick guard off the bench that can score. Barea is listed at 6’0" but he is not that tall. He may be 5’11" or so in shoes and Thomas is more athletic and could possibly have a longer reach than Barea.

BBall4life88ParticipantI’m glad you mention this llperez, I was thinking the same thing. Maybe it’s just my love for small pg’s like myself and I’m a bit bias but Thomas is my favorite player in this years draft and I’m really rooting for him. I think a lot a small guys get underlooked.
I think you could make the argument that Thomas is one of the most athletic and skilled players in this years draft, obviously the only thing holding him back is his height, but like you said llperez he’s actually an inch taller than he was listed in college. The thing that a lot of people are missing is that Thomas is nearly 190 lbs. at 6% bodyfat! He small in height but not in structure. This kid is ripped and very strong for his height, not too many pg’s are posting him up, not to mention nearly none of the top PG’s post up anymore ala Jason Kidd, Mark Jackson. I don’t see Thomas as too much of a defensive liability, but a huge offensive threat. He shot the lights out at the combine, ranking near the top of all the categories right up there with Jimmer. We also forget that nobody can guard these smaller quicker guards like JJ or Lawson, these guys can take people off the dribble and create their own shot at will. I think people are really sleeping on Thomas, he’s going to be a great pick up in the second round, he definitley has top level talent and skills.

JNixonParticipantJimmer Fredette, Iman Shumpert and Enes Kanter have helped themselves more than Thomas with their combine performances off the top of my head.
Thomas had a strong combine, but someone who compared Thomas to a shorter Jonny Flynn was right about their comparison. Thomas doesn’t have the sweet jumpers that guys like Ty Lawson and Nate Robinson have to make him as tough to defend, nor does he have their level of athleticism. He will be limited by his lack of size alot, I don’t think him measuring an inch taller than we thought changes that much at all. None of the tests that Thomas did surprised me about him at all, I still think he’s a late 2nd round pick or undrafted player. And I think him sticking in the NBA will depend on if he lands on a team that is willing to accept his limitations and have a niche ready for him to fill. He still has ALOT to prove. The combine was good for him, but it doesn’t change much at all in the grand scheme.
