Memphis MadnessParticipantDerrick Rose is a superstar. I don’t care if his team lost to the Heat in five games. He had an awesome year and deserved the MVP award (although it should have been a closer race with Howard and LeBron getting more votes. Wade, Dirk, and Durant should have also gotten more votes). He is an incredible offensive force, but he has no second option. Rose basically IS the offense. The team’s defense and rebounding is great but the rest of the guys on the team are basically role players. The Bull’s bench is solid if overrated. In crunch time Rose’s supporting cast didn’t hit enough jumpers or get enough garbage baskets inside.
LeBron’s old Cavs teams played great in the regular season with a great defense and a commitment to rebounding. They were a deep team, but LeBron had no legit 2nd option to play with. His supporting cast consisted of glorified role players who didn’t make enough jumpers for the Cavs to win a championship. … their bench never really came through as expected either once the playoffs rolled around. LeBron WAS the offense, and no other player could get his own shot. Yes, they hustled and scrapped defended in the playoffs, just as they had done in the regular season, but in the playoffs EVERY TEAM hustles, scraps, and defends.
This year’s Heat team was said to be a 3 man team with a bunch of scabs around them. Well, yeah, it was a 3 man team but among those 3 guys were two superstar wing players (2 of the best 5 guys in the league who can both defend when they are interested), and an all-star power forward. The Heat’s center doesn’t do much but he does defend, block shots and rebound. He can hit some wide open dunks too also helps. But he doesn’t really hurt the team either. He doesn’t take bad shots or screw up the team’s chemistry. In that way, Joel Anthony is kind of like the two centers who started in the 1993 Finals between the Bulls and Suns. Bill Cartwright didn’t have great stats for the Bulls, and he was even older and slower than he was in 1991 and 1992, but he played smart, got some rebounds, clogged up the middle, and played defense. The Suns starting center, Mark West, was under-sized, but he could block shots, get some rebounds, and also clogged the middle. His main offense was dunks and putbacks, but he didn’t take bad shots and he didn’t screw up the team’s chemistry or stop the ball on offense. In a lot of ways, Joel Anthony is a very close comparison to Mark West, and he gets the job done, blocks shots, and does the dirty work. If he scores a few buckets a game it is a bonus, but he never takes bad shots.
The 1991-1993 Bulls had 2 superstar wing players (MJ and Pippen at the 2 and 3, who were both top 5 players who could really get out and defend and also handle the ball), a good power forward who could score some and rebound some (Horace Grant was also an all-star in 1994), and some good role players. John Paxon and BJ Armstrong weren’t great point guards but they got the job done and could hit jump shots. Their centers weren’t great but there were lots of them and they did what they were supposed to do (Cartwright, Purdue, Scott Williams).
The 1996-1998 teams still had MJ and Pippen and replaced Grant with Rodman who was a great power forward and a premier rebounder, and clearly the 3rd guy in their Big Three. Up front they had a few servicable centers who mainly took up space, got a few rebounds, worked within the offense, and hit the ocassional jumper (Luc Longley, Bill Wennington, Salley/Parish/Bison Dele). They had a veteran guard who ran the point (Ron Harper) who used to be a big-time scorer but modified his game to fit in with the team. Off the bench they had a versatile sixth man who could score, shoot, and handle the ball (Toni Kukoc) and another guy who could hit the 3 and play the point (Steve Kerr). They weren’t the best bench in the league but they had guys who could hit big-time shots and their bench generally held their own.
The Heat are clearly built the same way as MJ’s Bulls with a great 1-2 superstar punch at the wings, a very good power forward as the 3rd guy to go along with a good all-around bench player (Mike Miller vs. Toni Kukoc), lots of big men, and a couple of servicable point guards who can handle the ball and hit open jumpers. The Heat could use a slight upgrade at point guard (along the lines of Paxon, Armstrong, and Ron Harper) and probably a reserve center who can hit open jumpers, get a couple of rebounds, and space the floor (along the lines of Bill Wennington) but that’s about it. Otherwise they are setup for a great run over the next few years.

6-6-6-lolParticipantNice post.
At the end of the day two hall of famers (Wade and LBJ) and an all-star (Bosh) are competing against Rose (potential HOF) and a good supporting cast (Boozer, Noah, Deng). Miami’s starting line-up is just too much and Chicago still overachieved. I honestly believed that they would lose to the Hawks.
The Bulls have a bright future with Rose and Noah. Boozer is inconsistent, both play and health wise. I also have a lot of respect for Deng but his potential has been reached. Chicago is a great city and I expect them to be very competitive with FAs. The Bulls remind me of the 1990s Pacers… always a good threat in the playoffs but they don’t have enough for a ring.

BasketballGuru24ParticipantBoozer is a better player then anyone on that cavs team beside lebron. Noah is a far better defender/rebounder/hustle player then varajao. luol deng is a pretty damn good player and would have been 2nd best player. the bulls bench is legit as well. The only thing i see this team mission is a 2 guard that can put the ball on the floor and score. Oj mayo, Nick young, jamal crawford, J.r Smith are types of players they should pursue this off season.

NYCrealdealParticipantplease dont even compare the suporting cast of lebrons to droses suporting cast.lebron never had two players who can go off for 20 any given night. drose has deng and booz who can do that. he never had 2 guys in starting lineup who can both average a double double. drose has noah and booz. and rose has pieces at the two , two lockdown defenders in bogans and brewer and a sharpshooter in korver. and i havent even mentioned the great minutes they get from asik and gibson. they lost b/c boozer and those other pieces didnt step it up this series and because miami was too good.
but i do agree with you with the bulls heat comparison..

Ghost01ParticipantBulls need a new player. No doubt. A legit scorer, a guy who can have the ball in his hands with the game on the line once in awhile to give Rose a rest.

ChrischiParticipant"The Heat are built like MJ’s Bulls."- That’s what I always thought. Pippen and Jordan, two extremely superstar wings who can score in a number of ways, rebound and pass and defend many positions thanks to their length. Small difference is that the gap between Jordan and Pippen was bigger than the gap between Wade and LBJ and that the Heat have another all-star. Great comparison imo, although the Heat still have to prove themselves.
I think D.Rose’ Bulls played played like the Cavs but they aren’t build like them. Rose has another all-star next to him, Deng who is close to being an all-star and a top5 center in Noah. Lebron didn’t have that.

The Bulls had a great regular season record just like the Lebron Cavs use to and they’ll end up finsihing the year like the Lebron Cavs. In the end they aren’t strong enough to compete for a championship. Boozers best years are behind him but you could do worse. Deng is solid all around but not an all star and Noah in my opinion has been overated since college. Unless the Bulls add some serious upgrades they’ll just be another version of Atlanta, finish in the top 5 and lose.

bennydabullParticipantThough the Bulls’ supporting cast was better than the Cavs’…
Lebron James in Cleveland is far better than Rose. So I’d say it balances out… Rose doesn’t make his teammates better like Lebron did. I’d say Mo Williams as a 2nd option was comparable to Deng’s role.

JoeWolf1The Bulls are a young team, and Noah and Boozer missed extended time for injury, and Derrick Rose has played 3 seasons in the NBA. I don’t think it’s time to go into panic mode if you’re Chicago. Address your needs at shooting guard and bring in another guy to replace Kurt Thomas and maybe try to draft a young PG with some upside to hopefully upgrade from C.J. Watson in a few years. They had a great run and lost to a better more experienced team, next year or the year after may not have the same outcome.

Memphis MadnessParticipantJoeWolf1,
The Heat will still be there with a better top 3 and with solid role players off the bench who can, on any given night, outplay Chicago’s bench. Plus, I think the Heat will upgrade at starting point guard and backup center.
The Bulls need too many things: a legit 2nd option, a solid scorer off the bench, and a fifth big man.
The Heat can draft a decent point guard at 31 with perhaps Nolan Smith and Shelvin Mack still on the table. Isaiah Thomas might also be a good option (can push the ball, get out on the break, and has the athleticism to finish at the rim). Or they can go with a solid big man in Keith Benson (if he is still there) or Jon Leuer (a Bill Wennington, Jon Koncak type) in the draft and then take a look at undrafted point guards with experience and leadership skills such as Ben Hansbrough and Kalin Lucas.

JoeWolf1Yeah, the Heat will be there, you have to expect Pittman to play a bigger role with them next season and I don’t know if they still do, but they may have Patrick Beverly over seas right now. They’ll be good, no doubt, and the favorite to win the East at that but I don’t think it’s a lock already for them to beat the Bulls. A lot of times a couple years experience does wonders for a team.
The Heat really proved something in their series, but Mike Bibby, Dampier, House, Howard, Z, and James Jones are all free agents. A lot of those guys haven’t even been suited up in the playoffs, but they are going to have to re assemble another team around thier main players. The Heat have needs too and I don’t think you can’t count the Bulls out already because they got outplayed in this series.
