Was reading an article in the Toronto star http://www.thestar.com/sports/basketball/nba/article/944583–feschuk-vince-carter-s-unfulfilled-promise that got me to thinking.

What kind of path would vince carter’s career taken if he had the drive, pride and competetiveness of a kobe, mj, bird or any other all time great.  When he played for toronto, and i’m not ashamed to say it, i was the biggest carter fan ever, and i always thought he was more explosive than kobe, and a little more creative offensively as well. So if you put kobe’s work ethic into that body, what would you have had for a career?

I think we’d be looking at a top 5 all time player with career averages around 27-28ppg 5-6rpg 4-5ast 1.5-2spg, plus top 5 all time in 3pt field goals made. Based on pure athletic ability, quickness, first step, 2 foot leaping, smoothness shooting form and footwork i think he is one of the greatest all time, unfortunately he is a hypochondriac who is super lazy, unmotivated, and selfish.

So what does everyone else think? Top 5 all time talent? or am i just a stupid former fanboy?

"We have seen 60 percent of what Vince Carter can do but we saw 100 percent of what he wanted to give…" Exactly… It amazes me and it disappoints me to see VC not being able to reach his true potential… He would have been an MVP winner had he had that Kobe mentality..

Although Vince was lacking in the intensity department, it was his initial knee injuries that really set his game back. He lost that extra ‘pop’, or explosivness that gave him his other worldy athleticism. He still had great vert but it wasnt with the same explosion off the floor that he once had. I think he did work hard when he first got to the league but once he got hurt and realized he couldnt quite perform at the same level he once did athletically, he folded mentally. Thats when the over acting, blaming of everyone else and the shitty attitude took over. He wasnt a wasted talent as much as an immature guy that couldnt deal with his own physical reality.

Before his knee injury, Vince Carter was the most explosive player of all time. He was crazy athletic and his first step and his vertical were above and beyond anyone elses. He had a 47” vertical at one point in time which is pretty close to the world record.

as far as the knees go, if he had done any kind of off season work, like kobe and others mentioned, his knees wouldnt have held up much better and he would have retained that explosiveness a lot longer.  Meh who knows, i just wish i was still watching carter put up highlights and stuff
