valentineSo far in this early college season these players havnt lived up to the hype they have recieved. Melo is shown to be very raw on offense and low defensive IQ ( no suprise. Said this all summer) Will Barton hasn’t produced like some thought and his brother is actually out playing him( was suprised by this one Perry jones looks shaky tryna handle the ball with college pressure and jumper needs work. He looked better then the other two and should average around 8pts 3st 7reb. You can see the potential in this kid Some will say it’s too early but sometimes you can just tell when someone will have to adjust to the college game. Said it about favors early in the season last year and he pretty much continued the sameway all year. Didn’t have a bad year but he didn’t have a beasley/durant year some predicted. Some still think Perry will have that type of year but that ain’t happening.
Both beasley/durant/Eric gordan/mayo/love did work from day one scrimmages. The worst part of all this is these teams havnt played tough teams yet so it will only get harder Those who have looked pretty good Terrence jones-Kentucky Brandon knight Harrison barnes-unc Jared sullinger-Ohio st Deshaun Thomas Daron lamb Once again it’s not that stats that has me doubting the. First three guys it’s watching them Play in highschool and then watching them now (except Barton. I did expect more from him)
Fab melo-3pts 3reb 0blks fouled out both games
Perry jones-11pts 4ast 8reb 7 turnovers
Will Barton-2pts 1reb 1ast. Off the bench0 - Posted on: Tue, 11/16/2010 - 8:59am #435689

mikeyvthedonParticipantTo start judging to harshly, but it is safe to say that Will Barton and Fab Melo have gotten off to slow starts. Fab clearly is a project, and when you foul out with in both your first two college games in a combined 31 minutes (with no blocked shots mind you), it shows that you have a long way to go as far as not only defensive positioning, but conditioning. Fab should improve greatly with time, but to the people that said he was a sure fire top 5 pick, I think we may need to wait a while. Barton is just so incredibly skinny, I am sure strength will be an issue with him for quite a while. But with Perry Jones, it will just be a waiting game. I for one did not expect him to put up outrageous statistics, and think that if he even has an average year like Derrick Favors had last year at Georgia Tech, he will more than likely still be a top 5 pick. But it is hard to judge a prospect after their first game. It is very rare that a freshman comes in right away and just kills it right off the bat, and even rarer still that they maintain that consistently throughout a whole season. Perry Jones is not Kevin Durant, Fab Melo is not DeMarcus Cousins and Will Barton is not DeMar DeRozan. They will take time to develop, and Barton/Melo were already uncertainties as to being one and done prospects. Jones on the other hand, while he did not come through and kill it right away, I can not say his production was horrible or unexpected. I truly think Derrick Favors production at G-Tech might be somewhat of an expectation, maybe even fewer rebounds/blocks and lower percentages. If he averages like 12-13 points per game, chances are he still more than likely goes top 3 like Favors did, depending of course who is picking.

dude1955ParticipantIn response I think that people drink the koolaide and buy into the hype. Ill say it once and ill say it again of course you can dominate when you are 19 Perry Jones, and 20 Fab Melo in HS. You are playing against 16,17, and 18 year olds. Hypothetically you should be out of HS and in college. But now you can go to a "prep school", and be reclassified. I think before projections are made they should play games and put up legitimate numbers.

stanford hoopsJones game wasn’t horrible. He did what I expected him to do. Produce but shoot a low percentage and turn it over alot while looking lost from time to time like most freshmen. I expect his stats to be lower then favors once dunn comes back

HaleParticipantWill Barton has been playing hurt. Also it was evident from watching last night, he is probably the best passer Memphis has.

Im Your FatherParticipantI don’t care about the negative points, but what is there to disagree about when I said "Irving looked good in his debut too?"
Is 17 points 9 assists, 1 turnover, 4 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 block, while shooting 3-6 from behind the arc not a good debut?

dude1955ParticipantThats a great debut. Watching the Syracuse game. Fab Melo is not very good.

dude1955ParticipantBTW The 2011 Mock is a joke. Chris Joseph at #12??? Yeah how bout 3pts and 5 fouls. Im tired of all this hype. Just because a guy is athletic doesnt make him good.

stanford hoopsU didn’t know? On this site to some if you are tall and athletic then you have worlds of potential. Even over a guy wayyyy more skilled then you

jeff416ParticipantBarton finished with 22pts 8rebs 2asts and 3 stls. I watched the whole game and he really had a very good game. I would be surprised if he’s not a one and done and a lottery pick. Like I said earlier in the thread he sprained his ankle and that was the only reason he didn’t play well the first two games.

HaleParticipanti don’t think he should be a one and done. He needs to gain a lot of muscle and get much stronger to play in the NBA, plus he could be a monster for my favorite team again next year.

jeff416ParticipantHe is skinny but he can gain strength and there are plenty of skinny people who have made it in the NBA. He has great height and length, one of the best scorers in the nation, is a good athlete, and is a very good passer that all makes him a one and done imo.
And with Adonis Thomas coming in, I think Memphis would be fine without him lol.

hiphopismylifeParticipantBarton will definitely pick it up as he heals up, especially with Jelan Kendrick leaving. Perry Jones wasn’t expected to come in and be Blake Grifin anyway. I expect a Derrick Favors-type season out of him. With Melo being so new to the game, I think it only makes sense for him to start out quietly but I think he is a guy who might make the most strides of anybody over the course of the season as he adjusts to college.

stanford hoopsYea smart basketball minds knew jones wasn’t gonna dominate. But you had some on here who truely though other wise. Those were the ones who had never really seen him
play and based everything off his YouTube heighlighr tape. A favors season is very realistic0 - Posted on: Thu, 11/18/2010 - 8:33am #437787
