Birmingham, Ala. — Florida was predicted to win the 2011 Southeastern Conference men’s basketball championship in voting by a select panel of both SEC and national media members. Each SEC school selected media members that cover their team and additional writers from across the nation were selected by the conference office to form the voting panel.
The Gators are coming off a 21-13 season and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. They earned eight first-place votes, topping Mississippi State which earned three votes. Tennessee and Kentucky each received two votes and Georgia garnered one vote as SEC Champion. Florida returns all five starters, including Kenny Boynton, Erving Walker, Chandler Parsons, Alex Tyus and Vernon Macklin while adding one of the top recruiting classes in the nation.
Florida was the media’s favorite to win the East with 110 total points (13 first-place votes), ahead of second-place Kentucky’s 95 points (three first-place votes). Georgia (72 points) and Tennessee (71 points) were separated by just one point while Vanderbilt and South Carolina rounded out the top six.
In the West, Mississippi State’s 118 total points (18 first-place votes) were ahead of Ole Miss’ 84 points (two first-place votes). Alabama was picked third with 82 points. Arkansas, LSU and Auburn round out the top six in the West.
Georgia junior Trey Thompkins was the choice of the media for SEC Men’s Basketball Player of the Year with 18 votes. Ole Miss senior Chris Warren (one vote) and Kentucky Freshman Brandon Knight (one vote) also received votes in the Player of the Year voting.
Thompkins, Warren and Knight were joined on the All-SEC First Team by Georgia junior Travis Leslie and Vanderbilt junior Jeffery Taylor.
Arkansas’ Marshawn Powell led All-SEC Second Team honors and was joined by Florida’s Boynton and Parsons, Alabama’s JaMychal Green and Tennessee’s Scotty Hopson.
Points were compiled on a 6-5-4-3-2-1 basis for each division. Each media member also voted for one team as an overall conference champion and a five-player All-SEC Team.

RUDEBOY_ParticipantPicking a team that main core of players have been together for a few years isn’t a bad idea..Chemistry can sometimes be more important than talent….Almost every player in The Gators starting lineup are among the top 5 players at their position in the league….But none of their player are surefire 1st round picks except Parsons…Who’s the go to guy on the Gators?
I think Kentucky ,Miss St. and Tenn. will have a say in who wins the SEC if those teams can keep their players healthy….And dont sleep on Vandy and Georgia….

JNixonParticipantI like Florida to win the SEC too, to be honest.
Kenny Boynton should be a darkhorse All-American next year, with vastly improved efficiency and scoring numbers, while still playing the solid D he played last year.
Erving Walker will also shoot better I think. He’s too small to be an efficient scorer from the field, but he should benefit from not having to shoot as much as he did last year.
Chandler Parsons should have a good season next year, and while people always anoint Gordon Hayward "the next Mike Miller", Parsons is going to prove to be a Mike Miller-type player for Florida. He can shoot, pass the ball very well for a SF, and he’s a very good athlete at 6’9 at SF.
Alex Tyus, Patric Young, and Vernon Macklin is a nice athletic frontline. Tyus has a cash mid-range jump shot spotting up, and he’s a good offensive rebounder and defender against SF and PF’s. Young will provide high-level athleticism and energy for Florida, and even though he’s not very skilled offensively, he should be able to defend every frontline position as a Fr. Which is saying something. He’ll be an instant fan favorite for the fans in Gainesville with his energy and athletic ability. Macklin has a soft touch and long arms, and should be a 12 and 7 guy next year for UF down low.
And you can’t forget Casey Prather on the wing for depth. Prather has good athleticism and Coach Donovan loves his D (as do I).
I like Florida as a Sweet 16 or Elite 8 team. They have a nice mix of youth and talented returners. I think they will win the SEC as well.

kaceyParticipantUK needs Kanter badly. Their frontcourt depth would be really weak without him and would have to rely on Vargas and Harrellson at the five. Harrellson will be able to give some good minutes against poor teams, but by time SEC play starts up he needs to be on the bench. If Kanter doesn’t play, then UK may be forced to play small ball and will definitely have a small rotation.
