RUDEBOY_ParticipantChad Ford is 1 of the most hated Sports Writers in the country..Becuz of the outlandish things he’s written..And his latest article on UCLA coach Ben Howland adds to it..
In a recent article Chad Ford wrote the following….
Howland specializes in hiding his players with NBA talent..Over the past few years Russell Westbrook,Darren Collison & Holiday all exceeded expections ..Howland’s grind it out game plan is largely to blame..Those 3 point guards are blessed with great speed & attacking instincts..But Howland held them back to a plodding pace..He mostly played Westbrook & Holiday off the ball( along side Collison),which obscured their playmaking skills..Safely in the pros, those ex-Bruins have benefitted from the hand checking rules..
Ford ignores the fact that Collison wasn’t highly recruited coming out of high school.
And it was Howland that turned him into a NBA ready point guard..Ford ignores the fact that Westbrook wasn’t a top recruit..And it was Howland that helped him become a top 5 draft pick..
Ford might’ve forgotten Holiday got playing based on his outstanding defense..Something he learned under Howland.
Howland also turned projects like Ryan Hollins & Richard Luc Mbah A Moute into NBA players……

hiphopismylifeParticipantHoliday was a great defender coming in but you’re right I assume he got better under Howland. I think it gets alot easier to throw some blame now that they’ve had a bad season. Phil Jackson raved about the fact that Jordan Farmar was NBA-ready as a defender because of Ben Howland. Ford is right that maybe Howland’s players dont put up the biggest stats but lets not forget the biggest boost to a player’s draft stock: WINNING. And UCLA has done that under Ben Howland

Mr.Knick 32ParticipantCollison was a 4 star recruit coming out of college.
Holiday was a great defender coming out of high school
Westbrook was a 3 star recruit I believe as well. Then he grew 2 inches in his freshman season.

You might wanna re check that. He got 21/30 1st round picks correct this year. He got 22/30 in 2009 if I’m correct as well. Ford is great at his job. People just disagree with him so they call him a idiot.

Cardinal_FanParticipantHow are they being hidden if they were all first round picks. I think Ben Howland is en excellent coach who like Tubby Smith did at Kentucky puts guys in the NBA teaching them defense and the right way to play the game. I dont think anybody will argue that Collison, Westbrook, and Holiday have 1 thing in common outside of being from the same school, they all are very intelligent, high basketball IQ guys and above average defenders.

Mr.Knick 32ParticipantI fail to see how Ford is a idiot….. He predicts well in the draft and always gives good draft info. Just because you disagree doesn’t mean he’s a idiot.

JNixonParticipantThat’s actually pretty true. I thought Jrue Holiday would be an average NBA player at absolute best, because he put up below average stats for a 1-and-done guy, and for someone who was touted by alot of people as the top recruit in the 2008 class. It’s early, but he’ll probably have an above average NBA career I’d say.
Alot of the GUARDS he coaches probably don’t put up the numbers they could if they played for other coaches (I think Malcolm Lee would be in the NBA right now as a lotto pick if he played for a team like Memphis or Kentucky for example, because of the role their guards play), but they still have the talent and/or tools to get seen and have legit opportunities to play in the NBA, as Darren Collison, Russell Westbrook, Jordan Farmar and likely Malcolm Lee are all or were 1st round picks despite for the most part only putting up “merely” good numbers, or even worse in Holiday’s case.

sheltwon3ParticipantChad Ford is able to make his predictions based on information and inside people not just off his own knowledge. I am not that high on Chad Ford. I do think to some degree Howland’s offense hides their full talents but there is a different between college and NBA and his style may be gear toward college.
