White ChocolateParticipantThis year is going to be fun to watch and on that note here are my honorable mentions and top 5 canidates for the NBA Defensive Player of the Year:
Honorable Mention
LeBron James
Ron Artest
Dwayne Wade5. Raja Bell – Bell was brought in by the Jazz to defend all of the elite shooting guards of the league. He will get starter minutes in Utah and if he is anything like he used to be he will be a great defender and I am sure that he will be. Bell is one of the best man to man defenders in the NBA right now. I expect Bell to be rested and ready to start the NBA season. He will be the starting shooting guard for the Jazz and even though he is 34 he is still one of the best defenders in the NBA. If he can prove to us that he is a great defender, he can somewhat stop the best shooting guards in the league, and that he still has it he will be a darkhorse to win the defensive player of the year award.
4. Rajon Rondo – The last point guard to win the DPOY award was Gary Payton back in 1995-96 if Rondo can keep up the steals and great on ball defending he will be in consideration for defensive player and have a chance to break the streak of 15 years of no point guard winning the defensive player of the year award. Rondo is the best defending point guard in the league with Chris Paul as a close second. He will improve this year I think and like I said if he can keep up the steals, the good defending, and keep hustling for balls like he usually does he will be a definite canidate for the defensvie player of the year award. Not to mention that he has a huge wingspan for a point guard that helps him get steals, dive for balls, and is what helped him get 2.3 steals per game last year.
3. Gerald Wallace – A lot of people didn’t know that at one point last season Wallace actually led the league in rebounds before dropping to about 10 rebounds per game. Wallace also snatched up 1.5 steals and denied 1.2 shots per game. He has great athleticism for a small forward which allows him to get blocks. Like Rondo he has a good wingspan that also allows him to get steals. Wallace is somewhat a underrated defender and he makes opposing players pay when they think that he isn’t that good of a defender. I expect Wallace to pick up right where he left off last season as a defending monster. He is one of the top 3 canidates for DPOY this year. Any improvement that he has this season from last season would make him in definite consideration for the DPOY.
2. Josh Smith – It’s hard to ignore the fact Smith has pretty much produced defensively since his third year in the league. The 24-year-old is already entering his seventh season. On the flip side, it’s hard for opposing defenses to ignore Smith’s incredible wingspan, athleticism, and timing on the defensive end. In the 2009-10 season Smith racked up over two blocks and a steal and a half per game. While Smith isn’t as strong as Wallace, he’s a little bit quicker, and plays a little bit nastier. He’s one of the few guys in the league capable of the chase-down block. As if all that weren’t enough, Smith is left-handed, making right handed players shots and dribbles easier to block and steak. Smith will be a definite canidate and he will give Howard a run for his money for the DPOY award this year.
1. Dwight Howard – Howard is the definite player to beat this year and for years to come until the award is handed to somebody else. Howard is going for a three-peat this year. Howard averaged 13.2 rebounds, 2.8 blocks, and nearly a steal per game last year just doesn’t do Howard justice considering the effect he gives on opposing teams. Howard’s athleticism for a center is just great and whenever a player drives to the hoop on Howard every time I expect a block or some kind of denial by Howward he is just that good on defense. This is Howard’s award to lose and he has some good competition this year for the DPOY award. There are some darkhorses and sleepers who will definitely give Howard a run for his money and give competition for the defensive player of the year award.

omphalosParticipantGood call on Gerald Wallace, there’s a reason Charlotte went 4-0 against the Cavs last season. No honourable mention for Thabo Sefolosha? Also, don’t forget about Battier; with Yao hopefully back, Ariza gone and Kevin Martin in Battier can return to the lock-down defensive style he is used to rather than carrying more of the scoring load as he was forced to this season.
That said, barring a major injury or a monster season from Josh Smith, Dwight will have it locked up once again.

White ChocolateParticipantGood call on Thabo Sefolosha I forgot about him and Battier will definitely be a good defender this season, we will see.

OhCanada-ParticipantCant you ever make a single post or comment not relating the Jazz, seriously why would Bell be in arguement for Defensive Player of the Year if Miles is in the arguement for Most Improved Player and Hayward is in the arguement for Rookie of the Year. Where are these minutes coming from!

RUDEBOY_ParticipantRaja Bell has lost a Step..He’s no longer the defensive player he was a few years ago..
Thats why a defensive minded coach like Larry Brown let him go…

HandDownManDown13ParticipantThe fact that Bell is above James, Wade, and Artest is sad…
The fact that Bell is in here and you forgot Battier and Sefalosha is a travesty…

SwatLakeCityParticipantIm not quite sure Bell will start. He and Miles will both compete for the starting SG. Miles might get it because of his strong play in the playoffs, Bell might get it because he is a veteran and has played with the Jazz before so he already has chemistry with the team.
Btut I don’t Bell will get defensive player of the year award. I think it will go to Dwight Howard, Josh Smith, or Joakim Noah. I’m not even quite sure Hayward will get ROY. I wasn’t quite too happy with that pick and I think he will struggle this year. The reason why Hayward was considered for Roy is that he will be getting alot of minutes with Utah . They only have 10-11 signed up for next year. Not too many, so Jerry Sloan could give several minutes to him, Miles, and Bell. Miles could also receive the 6th man award. (If he comes off the bench and Bell starts) But mostly Utah players are getting so much consideration for MIP, ROY, Defensive player of the year, and now 6th man of the year, is because of their relatively small roster, meaning every player will get at least 10-15 minutes a game, if not much, much more.0 - Posted on: Sun, 09/05/2010 - 11:03am #394685

SwatLakeCityParticipantI think what cousinsfan was trying to say with James, Wade and Artest being honorable mentions is that everyone will consider these people and one of them may very well get it. These 5 are just other defensive players that should also deserve some consideration in their own right. In no way is he putting Bell before James, Wade or Artest.

SwatLakeCityParticipantI guess you could say that Mr. Knick. I think Cousinsfan should have changed the start of this post. He should have wrote “other than James, Wade and Artest, here are 5 players that should also receive consideration for Defensive Player of the Year Award.”

Mr.Knick 32Participanthere are 5 players that should also receive consideration for Defensive Player of the Year Award.”
That still doesn’t make sense because he listed the 1-2-3 guys for the award in Howard, Smith and Wallace. He seriously thought Raja Bell would be a top 5 defender this season.
I’m sorry, Raja Bell is not a top defender in the NBA anymore.

3 if he doesn’t win it. He said he’s down to his dpoy weight and that’s his mission for this year. When it comes to defense I never doubt his commitment0 - Posted on: Sun, 09/05/2010 - 11:35am #394721
