JNixonParticipant#3: Purdue Boilermakers
Frontcourt- Chris Kramer was one of the top 3 defenders in college basketball. He’ll be missed, but there is big talent in this unit. The starting C figures to be potential All-American JaJuan Johnson. Johnson is a 6’11 220 guy who can make mid-range shots with effectiveness, can use his length and touch to score around the rim, and he’s a good shot-blocking presence from the weakside. He’s also surprisingly decent defending the post despite his frame. Still, he’s pretty weak and not exactly a good finisher through contact. He also is heavily reliant on his right hand and using his length, which works a bit now, but will hurt him a bit and make him predictable against NBA bigs. I think the way Ed Davis plays in the NBA will be a good indicator of how Johnson will project to the NBA. The PF will be 6’8 210 Robbie Hummell, a true combo forward. Hummel is a good all-around player who is smart, efficient, a solid shooter, ball-handler, and passer, and he’s not really afraid of physical contact. Still, he lacks athleticism and quickness and he doesn’t project well to the NBA on the defensive end. All Robbie Hummel is to me as a prospect is Gordon Hayward 2.0. He figures to be one of the 5 best players in the Big 10 next year. The SF/off-guard situation is the one with the questions now that Kramer is gone, with Fr. Terone Johnson, and Kelsey Barlow are potential candidates to play minutes here. The 6’2 190 Johnson is a guy with nice smarts and the ability to play sound D, even though he doesn’t stand out anywhere. Barlow is a 6’6 wing with nice quickness and a skinny frame. He has the potential to be a good on-ball defender and an effective slasher, but he needs strength, better shooting skills and more experience. They have 2 potential All-American players in the fold, so it’s hard to criticize them. Still, their off-guard/SF situation is one that will need to be answered by the conference slate for them to be the threat they can be by tourney time.
Backcourt- 6’3 185 SG E’Twaun Moore is their best player. Moore is a solid player who has a developed offensive game that features a strong mid-range game and sound overall ability. He’s rather small and not exactly a great ball-handler, but he’s effective scoring off screens and working without the ball. He’s not a great NBA prospect to me, but he does seem like a perfectly good overseas player. The PG spot will be manned by the diminutive 5’9 PG Lewis Jackson. Jackson is very quick and an extremely effective pressuring the ball on D, and he takes care of the ball (3.1 apg/0.9 to’s pg). He’s not a good shooter, not much of a threat to score much, and his size limits him around the rim, but he seems like a bet to bounce back from a disappointing season last year where he missed more than half of the season due to suspension and a foot injury. He should continue to take care of the ball, pressure the ball on D, and get the ball in the hands of the playmakers on Purdue. Ryne Smith, Anthony and Terone Johnson, and Barlow figure to get time at the PG and SG spots in limited time. Smith is an energetic guy who plays both guard spots, and he can drain 3’s and he hustles hard on D and Anthony Johnson is a relatively polished Fr. guard, but he doesn’t stand out at anything. This group has Moore who looks like a front-runner for B-10 P.O.Y and the offense will have caretaker Lewis Jackson back playing at his best after a shaky last year. Depth is inexperienced, but they figure to play limited time anyway and all bring different dimensions.
Overview: Coach Painter is a decent coach IMO, and last year Purdue had the look of at least an Elite 8 team before Hummel went down with injury. I see them as an Elite 8 team at full health next year too.

Mr.Knick 32ParticipantI know who’s number one but for the love of me I cannot think who’s number 2 on this list.
I like Purdue. Honestly looking at the way the Tourney turned out, they probably would have won the title instead of my Dukies.

JNixonParticipantChris Allen will be replaced by Keith Appling, Lucas should be just fine returning from injury, and Lucious probably will be suspended and Appling’s minutes will just be extended more

gregoden08ParticipantReally good and I completely agree with bascially everything.
However, “I think the way Ed Davis plays in the NBA will be a good indicator of how Johnson will project to the NBA.”
I completely disagree with this. Besides their lack of strength, they are completely different players and Davis is WAY more talented.

JNixonParticipantI’ll make you guys a list tomorrow.
But Ed Davis is basically a hyped up JuJuan Johnson. Davis isn’t much if at all more talented than Johnson, he just gets more recognition for playing for UNC. I don’t see much of a difference at all between the 2.

OhCanada-ParticipantIf thats so then Johnson just isnt getting enough hype. If your saying Davis was overhyped being selected at 13 by the Raps you must be joking. He shouldve gone 6 to G-State, but the Warriors picked the wrong guy and then the rest of the picks were players at different positions so thats justifiable. Although Davis should not be considered OVERHYPED, he is fine right where he is as far as hype goes.

You mean 7th to Detroit right? Ed Davis wasn’t better then Greg Monroe.
JuJuan Johnson is not a 3 on any team in the NCAA or NBA. He’s a 4.

JNixonParticipantLol what exactly does Ed Davis do better than Johnson? Think about it, all Davis is is a guy who scores around the rim by relying on his length and touch in the form of basic jump hooks, and now a new-found decent 12-15 foot jumpshot. He also is an OK rebounder (solid offensive rebounder, mediocre at best on the defensive glass) who can block shots at a pretty decent clip. All that sounds exactly like JuJuan Johnson to me….
I can tell you like Ed Davis and/or UNC, but Davis is/was a complementary player at the college level and NBA level. Johnson is the same way…Davis being the #13 pick has nothting to do with him being more talented or better than Johnson man. In reality, he’s not.
