Should Caracter not make the Lakers roster, however, there’ll be no shortage of suitors. According to a Twitter from New York Post sportswriter Marc Berman on Saturday, “If [the] Lakers, [Denver] Nuggets or [New York] Knicks can’t sign Caracter, word is two Italian teams, one Israeli club and Olympiakos have interest.”

Now it doesn’t take Holmesian-level logic capacity to deduce the identities of at least two of the three unnamed (presumably) Euroleague teams in the running to bid for Caracter’s services: Clearly the “Israeli club” is Maccabi Tel Aviv – presuming Santa Claus hasn’t recently dumped an early Xmas gift of a few million on Galil/Gilboa – and one of those “two Italian teams” is certainly the American player-loving Virtus Roma. The logical assumption would be to pencil in Montepaschi Siena as the second Italia squad.

But the best fit of all in Europe (and probably the highest contract offer) for Caracter would probably be with the Reds. Caracter might even ultimately be considered an upgrade from the departed Sofoklis Schortsanitis: Caracter may even be adding a few pounds over Shortsanitis in addition to possessing higher speed and slightly better mobility.

He had a great summer league minus his turnovers caused by double teams and him fouling a lot. He has proved to be servicable player but on the Lakers roster he will get limited playing time so it is up to him to decide if he wants a lot of minutes overseas or if he prefers to get limited minutes in the NBA.

i hope he signs w/ an nba club. i too cant see him getting much playing time w/ the lakers but if they do sign him, i think he will benefit greatly by having both one of the best coaches and players ever on his team. more than anything though im happy for him. just as RUDEBOY1000 was saying, he was once a top rated recruit and then ran into a little trouble after getting into college but now hes presumptively gotten his act together and has a number of suitors waiting to take a chance on him. I hope some of the other talented collegiate and high school players who dont have the best attitudes take a look at caracter and how his situation unfolded and wise up per his mistakes and not their own.

    1) I don’t quite get this story. The Lakers need to keep 13 men of their roster. They currently have eleven men signed, one of whom is just dead paper because of injuries, and two unsigned draft picks. The Lakers can’t save money by not having the league minimum number of players. They have to fill those spots, and Ebanks and Caracter are cheaper than the alternatives. Where would the rumors come from that he wouldn’t make the Lakers come from? If I was the Lakers and had $90 million on the books for each of the next three years, I would be looking to get Ebanks and Caracter signed for three years at less than $1 million per.

    2) I’m sorry, but do we really have to go through the list of second round picks prior to Caracter being pick that were sold. The Nuggets had their chance. The Knicks bought a third one, and still didn’t take him. I wrote this immediately following the draft and nothing that happened in the summer league changes my opinion, the Lakers had the best draft. It was beyond my range of possibilities that Ebanks and Caracter could fall to them. Two of the ready-made prospects in this draft fell to the league’s best team for reasons I can’t explain. The one thing bad teams have on the Lakers is that for years they can’t add cheap young talent when they have sold off picks. Well, they just came away with a ready made stopper and the second best post player in the draft. Teams only have themselves to blame. #48 Latavious Williams, #49 Ryan Richards, #50 Solomon Alabi, #51 Magnum Rolle, #52 Luke Harangody, #53 Pape Sy, #54 Willie Warren, #55 Jeremy Evans, #56 Hamady N’Diaye, #57 Ryan Reid, and #58 Derrick Caracter. It looked dumb on draft night, and no better now.
