Well we all know that the Summer League is just that..The Summer League..And what happens in Vegas sometimes stays in Vegas..Marcus Banks & Kwame Brown are a few of the guys that starred in SL..

1.John Wall…Wall was the best performer in Summer League..He played consisently, showed maturity and made his teammates better..But needs to cut down on the Turnovers and work on his outside shooting..He showed during SL that if he continues to work on his game..In 3 years he can be 1 of the 5 best players in the league….Grade A+

2.Evan Turner…Struggled, averaged only 9 points on 33% shooting..But hit the boards..Looked out of shape..Maybe it was the rust or jitters of being in a NBA setting..Last year’s rookie of the year Tyreke Evans also played bad in SL…Grade F

3.Derrick Favors..Averaged 7 shots game the Nets 1st 4 games..But had a breakout game when the Nets limited teammate Terrance Williams to just 4 minutes the final game..Favors must overcome that timidness he had at GT ..And become more assertive..He has the skills to be a mini version of Dwight Howard..Grade C

4.Wesley Johnson..Played in 1 game..Before suffering a hamstring..He can handle the speed of the NBA..Moves well without the ball..Hung out at the 3 point line too much and didnt do much to stop his man on defense ..He said he wants to play shooting guard but hasnt showed that he can successfully put the ball on the floor..Or create plays for himself or his teammates..Right now he’ll be best coming off the bench as an energy guy..Becuz of his great shooting skills & athletic ability..Grade D+

5.DeMarcus Cousins…Scouts thought they were seeing the 2nd coming of Moses Malone.Cousins manhandled the competition..And showed decent passing skills & a nice touch from the outside..But toward the end of the week.He slowed down..I guess it was fatique from playing 5 games in 5 days…Grade A

    6.Ekpe Udoh..Injured, out for 4 months

7.Greg Monroe…Monroe started the week off slow..But picked it up as the week went on..Monroe displayed solid offensive polish..Has good fundamental skills..But did not stand out..Grade B-

8.Al-Farouq Aminu..Seemed comfortable facing up with the ball in his hands..Showed that he can get his own shot..Grade B

9.Gordon Hayward..(Baby G) held his own against NBA level talent..Averged 10 points & shooting an amazing 61% from the floor..He’s not the 2nd coming of Bird..But he will not be another Luke Jackson either..Grade B-

    10.Paul George..George not only scored well 15.6 points a game..But averaged 7 rebounds & 2 steals a game..Grade B+

11.Cole Aldrich..Didnt play becuz trade wasnt finalized

    12.Xavier Henry..Contract Dispute

13.Ed Davis…Seemed to be getting back into game shape..Showed a nice touch around the basket..Lacked consistency to be counted on as an imediate starter for the Raptors..He didnt dominate. But he was efficient and did most of his damage near the rim, blocked shots & attacked the boards..Grade B-

14.Patrick Patterson..Patterson let everyone know he should’ve been selected higher..He averaged 10 points and 7 rebounds..Showed he can setout and knock down shots..Displayed a tremous versatility to his game..It’ll be hard for him to not crack the Rockets rotation..Grade B+

15.Larry Sanders…Let the coaches know that he wants to be the Bucks starting Power Forward of the future..Sanders showed a nice touch, blocked shots and hi the boards..The Warriors might wish they’ve selected this Theo Ratliffe Clone…Grade B+

I think you’re being a little hard on Turner and Johnson. I’d have given both of them about a C-. Aminu probably deserves about a C+. He was able to create his shot and get out in transition, but his jumper looked pretty inconsistent and he was out of control at times.

It’s a good evaluation, but I think you were a bit easy on Favors and Aminu. For the first couple of games, Favors was really lost and it seemed like every time they’d set up a play to give him the ball in the post, he’d either get stripped or travel trying to get off a post move. Gani Lawal was seriously outplaying him in one game.

Aminu rebounded well, and showed that he has an above average handle, but his shot was not falling at all. He shot a little over 10 shots in every game, and must not have gotten over 35%. He showed a couple of great things, like his ability to get to the line, defense, rebounding, use of length, but he was also apathetic and indecisive.

DeMarcus had at least 2 atrocious games this summer league and he managed an A? I think you’re a little hard on evan turner also….

    i liked your post however

Evan Turner didn’t deserve an F, more like something in the C range. Also, Tyreke Evans didn’t look bad in the SL last year.

Aminu didn’t deserve a B. He played below average, especially relative to his draft position. He lacked aggression in the 1st game or so, and then started getting too selfish and overaggressive in the rest of the games, which led to some inefficient playing. He also looked shaky on D, which is likely an experience thing.

Right on about everything else though IMO.

I agree with your Favors grading, but if it wasn’t for his last game in the Summer League he would have been sitting on a D. I think he and Ed Davis are going to have very similar rookie years, I’m curious to see which one becomes the better player.

I agree Joe…both Davis and Favors will be forced into early action due to lack of frontcourt depth on their respective squads

New Jersey’s only listed power forwards are Kris Humphries and Derrick Favors
That isn’t good news for a guy who needs time to develop and mature

Davis will probably have an up and down season and it may take 2 years before he starts to shine

    1000th post BTW 🙂

It’s being hard, but I have no problem with Turner’s F.

He didn’t play well at all and I was shocked at just how uncomfortable he was playing off of the ball. He pouted A LOT and looked like he didn’t want to be there. I didn’t like his body language. That’s the main reason I’m okay with the F.

I think he’ll be a lot better in the regular season, but I just expected more out of the number two pick and the player I considered the most complete player in the class.

obviously no one ever wants to put too much into summer league, but turner tried so hard to beat guys off the ribble, but he never consistently got the seperation or blew by his man and was thus forced into pulling up and taking contested shots. When you are not a great perimiter shooter and your strength is beating guys off the dribble, you had better have the explosiveness to leave guys behind you and i didnt see that from turner.

Favors is gonna be fine i think. Playing alongside brook, all he has to do is the dirty work,. Rebound, defend and finish up baskets. He has those tools and the offensive skills will come in time. But he will look bad if they try and draw plays for him and go to him from day one.

I don’t think so. I remember Evans being dominant in at least 2 games he played ( 1 vs Brandon Jennings)

Yeah..it looked like Evan Turner was pressing too hard..But if you watched him play..You can still see the all around game he’ll have once he gets into training camp ..He should play better when the regular season begins..
And sometimes in a setting like that..Guys arent use to what other players are capable of doing..

I think we need to be a little easy of Turner. Moving from dominating the ball to being off the ball is tough.

Turner will be just fine…He’s still my Rookie of the Year choice, even though John Wall does look like he may be legit faster than I thought.

    trust me..turner will be fine..

he wasnt use to playing with that set of players…
once he hits training camp and gets adjusted to the 76’ers system and the players he’ll be fine..
thats what separates turner from wall ..turner is a system player..while wall talents allow him to fit into any setting….

He thoroughly impressed me in his first couple of games. He’s gonna be a legit beast down low and out to about fifteen. But the one thing I noticed was that in the first game in which he played poorly (I think the third or fourth game), he missed his first couple of shots and he let that take him out of rhythm. He started pressing and even started missing shots in close. I think he’s definitely gonna have to learn how to get past poor starts in a game.
I really thought people were overblowing his maturity issues but it looks like they were legit complaints.

“Seemed comfortable facing up with the ball in his hands..Showed that he can get his own shot..”
..for a lovely 29 percent shooting.

“Scouts thought they were seeing the 2nd coming of Moses Malone”
… correction, bad scouts thought they were seeing the 2nd coming of Moses Malone. I like Cousins, but he is playing 25 minutes per game for a couple years. Between the fouling and conditioning, he is going to need some time.

“Monroe started the week off slow..But picked it up as the week went on..Monroe displayed solid offensive polish..Has good fundamental skills..But did not stand out”

The problem Monroe faced early in the week was that Austin Daye and DaJuan Summers are black holes who were only looking for their shots. Until they figure out that they aren’t good enough to look for their own shot, neither will be in the Pistons rotation. Monroe, like Jerebko, will be in the rotation. Both can get numbers, but it isn’t their goal when on the court.

“Larry Sanders…Let the coaches know that he wants to be the Bucks starting Power Forward of the future”

… Scott Skiles will gladly point out that he won’t be. The Bucks gave Drew Gooden $30 million. He is their starting power forward. Ilyasova is far more skilled and polished, so he will be getting minutes as well. Tiny Gallon can provide interior bulk if he makes the team. Brockman might get a few minutes and rebounds on occasion. Skiles doesn’t play rookies just because they are first round picks, and he isn’t fascinated by shot blocking and highlight dunks. He already made a point of saying Sanders has to be a better defender and rebounder. He said the same things everytime he benched Tyrus Thomas, and unlike with Paxson in Chicago it doesn’t appear that the Milwaukee front office will force him to play guys he doesn’t think deserves it.
