Tyreke JohnsonParticipantPG- Magic Erving Johnson
SG- Michael Jordan
SF- Larry Bird
PF- Tim Duncan
C-Kareem Abdul JabbarI think the top PG, SG and SF is pretty much locked, at least most people would agree on those players but for PF Tim Duncan may not be the most exciting but he has had a tremendous career, he has been a great scorer, rebounder, defender and has won 4 championships which I believe really separates himself as the best ever at his respectable position, he has 3 finals MVPs, two regular season MVPs, and is a 10 time All Star
You could argue Bill Russell because of his phenomenal defense and 11 championships, but in his time there were not even 10 NBA teams I believe and it wasn’t as big of a challenge as say the 80s, 90s or todays game so it wouldn’t be fair, Wilt was a great player but Kareem had played 20+ seasons in the NBA, had won multiple championships, one with Milwaukee and five with Los Angeles, he has 6 regular season MVPs with 2 Finals MVPs, he is a 18 time All Star, and still holds the record for most points scored in NBA history.

RUDEBOY_Participanti love your list…
but center & small forward will get arguments…
Some say Wilt, Russell, Shaq or Kareem
For the best Power Forward ever its between Duncan & Malone..But i’ll have to say Duncan
Some say Dr. J changed the way the game is played..But Bird was a better all around player..
And 1 day Lebron might be the best small forward ever…
But u will not find anyone that will not say Magic wasn’t the best point or Jordan wasn’t the best shooting guard….

dipt1982ParticipantKarl Malone is being UNDER RATED like crazy in this thread…for his career averaging 25 ppg-10 rpg-3.6 assists…….with his best season topping out at 31 ppg, 11 rpg, 3 apg.
Tim Duncan has never averaged over 23 ppg in a season, with career averages of 21-11-3…
They are both very good players, with the only difference being that Duncan won 4 rings. Duncan also did not play in the MJ era, which if not for that, Malone would have captured a ring or two, MAYBE. Duncan also had a better cast of players around him consistently, Malone had Stockton, but never had a Ginobili or a David Robinson to play with…
This is easy to see in my eyes, some people are so “in the now” that they forget about past legends…and Malone was indeed, a LEGEND.

llperezduncan and malone are very close, but i would give the edge to duncan and i dont think that is underrating malone. Duncan just has the rings. BUt yeah, people should never sleep on karl. He was built like a pro wrestler and ran the court as well as just about any big man in the 80’s and 90’s. Nice jumper, very good passer. Also very impressive how well he played until he was like 40 years old. Even his last year with the lakers he was getting decent numbers.
0 - Posted on: Wed, 07/21/2010 - 9:40am #359305
fastdanParticipantDuncan averaged 25.5pts one season…
The thing I always find amazing about Malone is that he never played LESS then 80 games in a season until his final year when he was with the Lakers, and he was 40! He also averaged 20-8 when he was 39. Absolutely absurd.
But I think Duncan gets the edge in that he can guard 4s and 5s and also was an amazing shotblocker in his prime, something Malone never did.
0 - Posted on: Wed, 07/21/2010 - 9:41am #359306

dipt1982Participant^^^ Exactly, I think people don’t realize the numbers he was putting up in his prime.
0 - Posted on: Wed, 07/21/2010 - 9:43am #359308

dipt1982ParticipantYour right Dan, I missed that 01-02 season, but still at 25 ppg, that was Malone’s career average. They were different style players. As a traditional PF I would take Malone, only because in this era of basketball, Duncan plays much more like a Center. Malone had a sick jumper on him!!!
0 - Posted on: Wed, 07/21/2010 - 9:44am #359309

PureshooterParticipantThat would be my list as well. Obviously Malone would be better than Duncan in transition, but I feel Duncan was a superior halfcourt offensive player and a much better defender.

the microwaveParticipanti think timmy D is best PF of all time, and i dont think Mail man is ANYWHERE close.. but i agree mailman #2, then Barkley has to be #3 PF…(his credentials below)//// ALso played the position at 6’4″ (he was not 6’6″)..

llperezjust to clarify the charles barkley height thing. He has himself said and has been officially measured at 6-4 3/4 without shoes. By NBA standards, that puts him about 6-6 compared with other nba players since nba measurements go by shoe height.

thunderforthewinParticipantit is almost impossible for players nowadays to get to get into the all time 5 because no one is willing to accept change unless something spectacular comes along, i would say only lebron james HAD a chance, but if he wins 5 rings doubters will always say how he needed two of the games top players to do it

bullsfan121212tim duncan’s defense is much better than malones and thats what puts him over the top. you can talk about offensive numbers all you want thats just half the game.
Bill Russell has more north american sports championships by a player than anybody anywhere in the history of man kind lol. that stat is prolly the greatest stat to have. plus he won 5 regular season mvp’s and four of those times his team won it all. there was no finals mvp in his time.
there isnt really much debate about pg and sf. dr j was great and so was stockon at pg prolly the second best in my opinion but pg sg and sf are pretty set right now
0 - Posted on: Thu, 07/22/2010 - 4:39am #359798
bullsfan121212duncan and shaq are both better than kobe. they have carried there team to championships three times kobe only has twice.
if kobe is better because he has more rings than robert horry is better than all of them. i dont want to hear that argument

TRC1991ParticipantKareem: 24.6 ppg, 11.2 rpg, 3.6 apg, 56% FG, 2.6 bpg (played from 1969-1989)
Wilt: 30.1 ppg, 22.9 rpg, 4.4 apg, 54% FG, (played from 1959-1973)
Kareem played against tougher competition and was far more accomplished (6 rings to wilts 2 rings) but wilt put up better numbers
its up for debate

——————————————————————————————————————————————–Numbers are a tricky subject to evaluate though. In the 60s several players put up numbers that seem absurd by today’s comparison. One could argue for Oscar Robertson or Elgin Baylor over Magic Johnson and Bird based on numbers.
Honestly though I feel like when evaluating the greatest players in NBA history it’s necessary to lump them into two categories. 1950-1980 and 1980-2010.
The game has gone through such a big change in between those two era’s that it is next to impossible to compare players from one era to another. Kareem though (along with Dr J, Gervin and Moses Malone) was one of the greats who excelled in both the tail end of the the first era and the beginning of the new era. Those guys helped change the game into what we know and love today.
All-Time team 1950-1980
G Oscar Robertson/Bob Cousy
G Jerry West/Pete Maravich
SF Elgin Baylor/John Havlicek
PF Elvin Hayes/Bob Petit
C Wilt Chamberlain/Bill RussellThe greats in both eras
Kareem Abdul Jabbar
Julius Erving
Moses Malone
George GervinAll-Time team 1980-2010
G Magic Johnson/Isaiah Thomas
G Michael Jordan/Kobe Bryant
SF Larry Bird/Lebron James
PF Tim Duncan/Karl Malone
C Hakeem Olajuwon/Shaquille O’NealIf I had to evaluate the greatest over the entire course of NBA history I would give Kareem the edge because he was the better defender and could shoot free throws adequately unlike Wilt whose free throw shooting was his achilles heel. Kareem had no weaknesses on the court.

JoeWolf1Stockton and Malone are two of the best player in the history of the NBA, but I agree you can’t put them as the best in their position because of their lack of titles. It sucks to say because Stockton is the career leader in steals and assists and Malone is the 2nd leading scorer of all time, but without the hardware I’d put them both as #2 on the list of best power forward and best point guard.

omark422ParticipantPG- Magic Johnson
SG- Michael Jordan
SF- Larry Bird
PF- Tim Duncan
C- Hakeem OlajuwonHakeem is the best center of all-time. There hasn’t been a more well-rounded player in the history of the league regardless of position.

Mr.Knick 32ParticipantOne thing about Malone is he has the all time record of 2,000 point scoring seasons with 11.

GrandmamaParticipantI’m not sure how one kid is saying that Duncan is number one and Malone is number two, yet he say’s Malone is nowhere near Duncan. Makes no sense, it’s about as even as an argument as you can have….. I thought most people on this site agreed that Duncan is more of a C than PF?
0 - Posted on: Thu, 07/22/2010 - 12:30pm #360284

Russell0WestbrookParticipantWhy no KG he has shown with a team around him he is a winner every year he has been healthy with boston they have been in the finals?
PG- Magic
SG- …
SF- Big O
PF- KG (better all around than Duncan
C- Shaq (best center in the era of Dream, Ewing, Admiral, Mourning, and Mutumbo)PS I refuse to put a name by SG we all know who it is

I’m gonna say
Magic
Jordan
Bird
Malone
Kareem0 - Posted on: Thu, 07/22/2010 - 12:41pm #360301
omark422ParticipantDream swept Shaq when they went head to head in the finals.
Dream greater than Shaq. Better all around center. Period.
0 - Posted on: Thu, 07/22/2010 - 1:53pm #360387
cycloParticipantMailman in his prime was the best PF I’ve ever seen.
I’ve always viewed Duncan as more of a C.
0 - Posted on: Thu, 07/22/2010 - 3:06pm #360441

dipt1982ParticipantThank you, finally some love for the Mailman, hands down the best PF ever!
0 - Posted on: Thu, 07/22/2010 - 3:09pm #360445

dipt1982ParticipantAnd BullsFan, Shaq “carried” the Lakers? I’m pretty sure Kobe was doing his part to help win that title as well, check the stats. If Kobe wasn’t there, the Lakers wouldn’t have won those three titles. And the same goes for Shaq, vice versa. They needed each other, and accomplished the goal of winning. That’s just a stupid comment to make.
0 - Posted on: Thu, 07/22/2010 - 3:15pm #360453

llperezyeah, kobe was all nba on offense and defense and took the shots down the stretch. Comparing him to robert horry since kobe wasnt the man as you put over shaq is stupid.
0 - Posted on: Thu, 07/22/2010 - 3:53pm #360525
mbdParticipantNo way is the Dream better than Shaq he was playing against a young Shaq and The Dream was in his prime at the time. Shaq is the most dominant player ever.
pg-MAGIC
SG-MIKE
SF-BIRD
PF-Push Malone and Duncan, Duncan was a better defender, But Malone was a force on the Offensive end i think Malone wouldve just bullied Duncan, and Timmy would just Shoot over the top of Karl.

Chicago1980ParticipantPG Isiah Thomas was never a magic fan always loved isiah especially since he is from the same part of chicago as me.
SG Michael Jordan greatest player ever.
SF Larry Bird great competitor won championships unbelieveable shooter
PF Tim Duncan he has size he can shoot he plays defense and he has won titles.
C Hakeem Olajuwon he was an unbelieveable big man that could do everything and he dominated some of the best centers in his era.0 - AuthorPosts
