Who’s Your Favorite Player That Never Panned Out

I thought Maggette would be a star. He had all the tools and skills to match.

Team? The Cavs teams in the last couple yrs, even though the supporting cast was just bad I thought they were going to win it all.

Sebastian Telfair, first pro athlete I ever met, I met him back in his HS days, seemed like a down to earth guy, was considered one of the top PGs in the nation, and well….you know how that story goes..

And my favorite team that never wasnt good has got to be last seasons Golden State team, Curry, Ellis, Watson, Morrow, were probably the only non-d-league guys on that team that werent injured. But it was sure fun to watch knowing that every night they could drop 120, even if it meant they gave up 140

Frank Williams

Juan Carlos Navaro … took pay cut after being absolute star in Europe to come play for Grizzlies. Had to split time with Mike Miller. Was very productive, but didn’t get calls from refs like he expected. Wish he was made point guard instead of shooting guard … too small defensively. But was fun to watch.

Nicholas Tskitishvili … Skita. Was hoping he would do well. Great example why you don’t pick someone high in draft that was never main player for their team.

Jason Williams … so sad to see his career turn out like it did. Seemed like a good young man.

Dejuan Wagner … ditto for Dejuan. Exciting player, suffered illness … sad.

Probably Tezo (ButlerBulldogs) I was upset he never got a fair shot at the NBA.

My favorite two players that never panned out are Dajuan Wagner and Shaun Livingston.

My favorite team that never really panned out was the 2001-2002 Sacramento Kings. They really got screwed during the Eastern Conference finals.

My all time biggest dissapointing team/players is when Jason Kidd and Penny Hardaway joined up in Phoenix. This was before people realized Penny was never gonna be the same again. Lots of experts were saying that would be one of the all time great backcourts. I would play as them on my playstation with both getting triple doubles and just doing crazy stuff.

the first year together, penny averaged 17-6-5 and kidd got 14-10-7. Man they could have been great, but injuries to penny made it never happen

I was disappointed in never getting to see that Grant Hill and Tracy McGrady pairing in Orlando.

As far as my favorite player who didn’t pan out… Jonathan Bender.

Dajuan Wagner of course he was the Messiah he and Lebron would’ve been doing damage

My tean is the Nuggets in 06-07 with Anthony, Iverson, Martin, Camby, Nene, and Smith they could only get the 8 seed and never came together as a unit

I’m going to say Randolph Childress and Ed Cota. I still cant figure out why Cota never got a shot in the league.

Lol that’s funny. I never even had a chance at a chance to play in the NBA! It’s coo though. I got a free college education and made the best out it. All my friends are paying back school loans while I’m making money, saving and splurging a little lol.

llperez- great one. penny and kidd are probably two of the most versatile pg’s ever. both with incredible playmaking ability. That could hae been a tremendously fun team to watch win ball games.

How about all the T-mac and Yao tandem in Hou? Too bad they couldn;t stay healthy enough to make a real run. they could have had a dynasty there.

I believe it was that time Kyle Korver played really well against you that ended your prospects at the NBA. Though in seriousness, it is great that you made the most of your education and don’t have to worry about loans. If only more college athletes (the one and dones mostly) followed your suit,

J.R. Giddens. He’s the 1st athlete I’d ever met in person and he was really great back in HS. He should’ve beat LBJ in the Mickey D’s slam dunk contest, but of course, they were political. He had a tough road to be in the NBA (probably because he went to Kansas) but he’s there and he still hasn’t found a niche.

I played at Vincennes JUCO my first two years and then finished my last two at Indiana State. I graduated in 2006, which seems like forever ago.

What was the biggest highlight of your career at ISU??

Easy… Tip dunk on Patrick O’Bryant, who was somewhat of a big deal in the MVC.

Naw, it was his junior season.

I still can’t believe he got drafted 8th though. I knew he’d be a bust all along. I remember just laughing when Golden State picked him.

Omar Cook. One of the best known point gaurds to ever come out of New York. Has sick handles and was a great passer, second in the nation in assists as a freshman at St. John’s. Pretty impressive, but never stuck with any NBA team. I always liked his game and passing ability, just couldn’t shoot. I still think he deserved more of a shot.

Tezo, O’bryant only played 2 years at Bradley.

It was the 2004-2005 season, so yes he’d have been a freshman. For some reason, I was thinking he came to Bradley from a JUCO first.

Jamaal Tinsley: Had a couple OK years, was a stud at Iowa St. I didn’t think he would be a star, but I had higher hopes for him.

Alando Tucker (so far)…oddly enough for a Bo Ryan guy, if he goes to a team that likes to run (and doesn’t get buried behind vets), i still like his chances

1.Keith Lee-Ask anyone that has followed Memphis University basketball for the past 30 years and they would say Lee is the 2nd best player after Penny Hardway to play for the school..They would have him ahead of Derrick Rose and Tyreke Evans..But a severe knee injury affected his draft stock and doomed any chances of ever having a long nba career….

2.Keith Van Horn-He had a Nice career,but he could’ve been an All Star…Despite having a soft label,he was a great rebounder…

4.Tito Horford-Al’s dad..I started watching college basketball during the era when great big men came along like Sampson,Ewing,Olajuwon & Robinson….I was rooting for him to do great things..He had the size and body,but he didnt know how to play the game…

My team is the 08-09 Thunder. That season sucked donkey balls for them, but i was excited to get a new hometown NBA team. Probably the only team where i was a  fan of everyone on the roster too.

I knew there had to be other posters on here that played college ball…I’m 6’6, i played at Calhoun jr. college in Alabama my stats there were 17pts/7rbs/3assts..My former high school coach in Mississippi told me about a new pro team called the Greenville Bluesmen that was being formed..I tried out and made the team..The league also featured The Arkansas Rimrockers which now is in the D-League today…We were only paid $400 to $600 a week during the summer,much less than what i was making working as a videographer at a news station..But i loved the game so much..And telling girls i played pro ball got me a ton of dates and alot of free stuff…I sent in some of my game highlights to an agent and they got me a tryout for a team in Germany ,making close to 70,000 a year..I Hooped for about 5 years in 3 different countries..And saved alot of money becuz most of our expenses like rent was paid for,we even got a free car when we signed…

WHY ARE WE TYPING IN CAPS?

Might be a little early for both of these guys, but Josh Smith, and Michael Beasley. I love to see the great players have great rivals, and I thought Beasley would be the perfect foil for Durant, as they were both oversized SFs with nice Js, and around the same age. Smith would have been the guy to take on Lebron; before he bulked up to play PF he was every bit as quick and strong as Lebron, and even if he wasn’t as good a shooter, he had the potential to really challenge Lebron physically and skill-wise. As it is, he’s been stuck at PF for much of his career, and has quite frankly underwhelmed.

 Marcus Fizer easily is my favorite player that never panned out though he did have some spectacular games when he was wearing a Chicago Bulls uniform… I remember thinking this dude is gonna be producing 21 and 10 with my Bulls… He does remind me of Charles Barkley in college but injuries and ineffectiveness, not to mention off-the-court antics made him a burden instead of an asset… I was disappointed he didn’t last in the NBA but during his tenure with the Bulls, I was one of the guys rooting for him… He was a solid 6th man for them averaging 12 ppg and 7 rpg…

James White, and seeing Jason Maxiell’s success in the league makes me wish Eric Hicks would have made it as well. And while I’m on a roll, Steve Logan should have kept his nose to the grind and stuck around too. DerMarr Johnson could have had a longer career. Got UC, get it together ha.

Marcus Hatten.  Loved watching him at SJU.  Thought he’d find a spot in the league as a bench scorer.  Last I checked he’s doing well overseas. 

 I think Jacque Vaughn and Scot Pollard had great careers considering what was expected from them.

Pollard played 10 years, played an important role on some really good Kings teams, and won an NBA championship.  For a guy drafted 19th as a hustle/role player, I think he panned out quite well.

Same with Vaughn, he was the 27th pick played 11 years and also won an NBA championship. Was a safe bet as a backup point guard who was going to spell you starter and not mess up.  Finished his NBA career with a 2.5 to 1 assist to turnover ratio.

I’m a big Jayhawk fan myself, but those guys had great careers and as late 1st round picks they weren’t really expected to be big stars at the next level.  I bet if you took an over/under for 5 years in the league when those guys were drafted there would be a lot of unders and they both played at least 10 years and had very good careers in my opinion.

I Brian Scalabrine would be a Dead man’s Version of Larry Bird……lol

 Mike Taylor from the Clippers bout as athletic(Speed,Quickness,Leaping ability,Explosiveness) as any guard playing right now dropped 35 on the knicks turned around and dropped 25 the next night on the spurs, to end the season played horrible in SL and was out the league. 

Only 25 tho and its said that he’s playing really well in Europe and the D-League so maybe he can make a comeback, dude is a top notch athlete at the 1 tho for sure.
