Anyone realize how the play of the PG has dramatically evolved recently. These majority of these hyped PGs coming to the NBA are much flashier and seem to be much more athletic plays. Personally, I think this is in part due to streetball becoming so publicized, especially with the coming of the AND1 mixtapes. I know it may sound silly, but after watching those when I was younger, I can say my skill and court vision def. grew. I think the new generation of guards is in part due to the emergence of better ball handling and the realization again that a pass can be equally as valuable as a shot.

I guess you could attribute some of it to the AND 1 phenomenon … i’d personally attribute a lot of it to some of the rule changes over the past decade … specifically making the handcheck on the perimeter illegal … i think that really shifted the emphasis of the guard position to smaller and quicker guys, who’s quickness may have in previous years been neutralized by the handcheck

When I think of a great PG I think of someone able to do both, their all around game has to be great as well as their passing ability, I cannot really think of anyone in the NBA right now who I would consider a great scorer and not a good distributor who I consider a PG.

whats funny is none of this is new. scoring pg have always been around from
kevin johnson, terrel brandon, gary payton, rod strickland etc. i think its just the younger generation doesnt remeber some of the older guards but the older guys know that this isntanything new. the guards now are more athletic though. im not sure and1 really has much to do with it because players where playing like and 1 guys during street ball games wayyyyyy before and 1 even got started. the real good ones enjoy watching and 1 but they know the difference between that kind of basketball and the kind that will get them into college.
