With the Hall of Fame ceremony just happening and the 2021 HOF class announced with the likes of Chris Webber, Paul Pierce, Chris Bosh and Ben Wallace as some featured NBA players (Toni Kukoc and Bob Dandridge both NBA players as well making it from the International and Veterans committee respectively), we wanted to get into some HOF debates. There are a number of locks currently playing in the league, along with many players making a case.

The criteria of the Hall of Fame is always super secretive, and unless you have made multiple All-Star games and usually other all league type teams in terms of All-NBA or All-Defense, it is a tough sell. Going through, we figured out that usually around 8 seasons at minimum for most players to have a strong case (and this particular player is pretty special). So, after 2014 it was mostly about players building good cases. Even the drafts after 2014, there are still some players with some definite work to do to build their case.

Who do people see as locks for the HOF among active players, and who do you think have possible cases beyond them? Who are young players you think will eventually be HOF players? I know at a time Derrick Rose looked like he would be Springfield bound, though injuries have made that look unlikely. It definitely is a marathon of consistency over a considerable period to make the HOF. Also, what criteria do you think is the most important? Finally, does anyone feel Rudy Tomjanovich’s plea for Robert Horry to make the HOF have legs?

rudy was only speaking up for his former player and friend..those 7 rings are a testament of being at the right place at the right time…but i dont think horry is hall of fame worthy…horry never made any all nba teams or all star team..the only all defensive team he made was in college at alabama.

i saw a stat that said during his career he made 795 three pointers ,which now ranks him 192nd in nba history..that has him tied with devin booker who is only 24..you might say the 3 pointers are primary part of today’s game, than during his career..but reggie miller made over 2500 and ray allen made 2973…

i remember what kenny smith said a few years ago..that playing with a great player like olajuwon opened up the game for him and made him a much better player.knowing olajuwon would be double teamed knew he had to work on his 3 point shooting in order for him to contribute to the team..horry also benefitted from playing with several great players olajuwon, shaq, kobe, duncan & robinson…

True, still can’t forget when he owned the Pacers in that finals the game Shaq was out though… Guys like him should have a certain place in the HOF but in some other special category with guys like Derek Fisher for the Fisher rule or even Geoff Petrie for being the shoe guy. But for sure none are typical deserving HOFs imo.

The locks are LeBron, Durant, CP3, Harden, Leonard, Curry, D. Green, Lowry, Howard, Westbrook.

Lillard and Irving are still in their primes but have probably done enough. Hard to imagine them not making it.

Giannis, Gobert and Jokic are still early in their careers but have accomplished so much. Another year or two of what they’ve been doing, and they’ll be in.

AD and Paul George are also pretty close, but their careers did not exactly trend upward this past season. Still I think they will get in.

One guy who I think should get in eventually, or at least get serious consideration, is Al Horford. But he probably won’t.

      Nice list, I agree mostly
I would add Carmelo as a lock, even though he didnt make it to a finals he has enough points and allstar selections

      A few interesting ones:
Klay Thompson – The second to fourth best player (depends on how you see it) on three championship teams and 2 more finals, 5 time all star, 2 time all nba, 1 time all defensive, 62 point game, record for most 3s in a game, and look how GSW are struggling without him.

Andre Iguodala – Also 3 championships, 3 more finals, 1 FINALS MVP, but only one time all star, 2 time defensive team but pretty pedestrian numbers.

Kevin Love – Has very nice numbers from his days in Minny, then a championship and 3 more finals. Probably makes it.

Rajon Rondo – 2 champiosnhips from 2 of the biggest franchises in the NBA, has led the league in assists, made 4 all stars and 4 defensive teams and even one all-nba team

I don’t Love makes it. He did nothing in Minny but pad stats and his time in Cleveland post Lebron is embarrassing Prime example of how not to conduct yourself and performance wise has been worse than bad..

I forgot about Melo, probably because I think he’s absurdly overrated, an inefficient ball-stopper, and not a team-first guy. But he’ll probably get in because he’s scored a lot of points and for whatever reason is a legend known worldwide by his nickname.

Forgot about Klay too, for different reasons. Just haven’t seen him in a while! He’s an interesting case. His career kind of reminds me of Byron Scott’s. Like Klay, Scott was the 3rd or 4th best player on a dynasty team. Like Klay, for a 3rd/4th guy Scott scored a lot of points (he led the Lakers in scoring during one peak Showtime year, and for a few years Magic, Worthy and Scott all had similar scoring averages). But Scott never even made an all-star team. I would say that Klay is not in yet, but if he comes back as a top player on a contending team — the Warriors or someone else — for a few years, he probably will get in.

Love and Iguodala aren’t even close, to me.

Rondo from 2008-2012 was on track to become a Hall of Famer. But since then he’s been really inconsistent. Much of that time he hasn’t even been a starter. There have been a couple reappearances of “Playoff Rondo,” especially last year with the champ Lakers, but still he was nowhere close to what he was with the Celtics. If he somehow leads the Clippers on a run to the Finals, I’ll reconsider his chances. But for now he’s the 21st Century Fat Lever, with a place next to Fat in the Hall of Really Good.

Because of the stat inflation its getting hard to determine who should make the cut.

There really isn’t a precedent for putting a player like Horry in the Hall of Fame. He never came even close to making an All-NBA team or All-Star team in his career. He never even made an All-Defensive team. He never finished in the top 15 for any season in any statistical category. The only real individual accolade he had was a 2nd team All-Rookie selection in 1993. The case for him relies strictly around the fact that he likely altered the history of the league several times with his clutch shooting. The Rockets title in 1995, Lakers in 2002 and Spurs in 2005 all likely don’t occur without Horry’s heroics. Still, by all the traditional measures that are typically used to evaluate Hall of Fame candidacy, he is not even in the ballpark of consideration.
Derrick Rose will be an interesting candidate when he retires. To the best of my knowledge there has never been a former MVP who failed to get into the Hall. A few years ago, it looked like Rose was well on his way to becoming the first. However, he has had somewhat of a resurgence over the past few seasons and made himself a valuable contributor again. I think he has at least put himself back in the conversation and a few more productive seasons could be enough to get him in.

I agree LBJ, Melo, KD, Harden, Westbrook, CP3, LMA (only retired just), D12, Steph,Kawhi, PG13,AD and Giannis are all HOF locks.
I’d say Kyle Lowry, Klay, DeRozan, Lillard, Thompson, Draymond, Wall, Beal, Rondo, Butler and Kyrie are either bordeline or will cement HOF reps in next few seasons.
Love, Griffin at their peak were HOF guys but was their output great enough. Iggy, Lou Williams, Horford, Millsap are other guys who sprang to mind as more outside shots.
D-Rose hasn’t had a title and due to injuries hasn’t put up the weight of figures we once thought he could so I’d put him in the borderline category too but I’m mentioning him sepearately as a he was a MVP.
One other name I’m going throw out Marc Gasol his NBA career falls a bit short but double Olympic silver medalist, twice World Champions with Spain as well as numerous other achivements outside of the NBA I think would push him into the borderline category I listed under the locks.
