Dazzling Dunks and Basketball BloopersParticipantI’m all for the rules protecting shooters and giving them a chance to land without injury but something about the way the bucks-heat game ended tonight just stinks.
With the bucks down by 3 in the closing seconds they tried to run a play to set up korver but Miami forced him inside the 3 point line. He was forced to kick it to Middleton who had to force up a desperation heave from a terrible angle about 6 feet behind the line. Dragic just basically stood there with his hands up but because he was technically in Middleton’s landing space the refs called the foul and gave him 3 shots which he made to tie the game. The heat defended the play about as well as they possibly could and dragic just happened to be standing in the wrong place at the wrong time.
So the heat get the ball back with 4 seconds left and get it to butler who is defended perfectly by Matthews and forced into a step back corner fadeaway. Giannis comes over to contest the shot but pulls back purposely to prevent fouling. There is no contact on the shot but when butler is on the way down Giannis slightly brushes his hip. I know the shooting motion doesn’t technically end until butler lands but Giannis’ contact clearly had no effect on the shot. Nonetheless, the ref calls the foul and butler makes both shots with no time left to end the game.
I know by the rules these were technically both fouls and you could say it evened out because the team that should’ve won did anyway. Still, people want to see playoff games decided by great players making great plays. If there is a legitimate foul that effects the shot you have to call it, but in these instances the contact that refs ruled had no impact on the shots. If this were a different era of basketball, those calls would have never been made, and it would be nice to see a little more discretion shown in situations like this.1+ - AuthorPosts
