Indiana forward Devin Davis has the use of all extremities and continues to improve after being involved in a accident early Saturday morning in which he was struck by a vehicle driven by teammate Emmitt Holt.
"I am glad to report that Devin is doing better this morning and has benefited from uninterrupted rest," Dr. Larry Rink said in a statement released Sunday. "His speech is normal and he has the use of all extremities."
Davis remains at IU Health Bloomington Hospital with a head injury after being struck by Holt's vehicle moments after exiting the car. He was admitted in serious condition.
Indiana coach Tom Crean was looking forward to Davis' continued recovery.
"Too often in life, we all take for granted the simple tasks of opening our eyes, processing thoughts and putting a simple sentence together," he said in a statement. "In our program, we routinely emphasize to our players that everything matters and watching Devin improve just over the last 36 hours has furthered our belief in that approach.
"On behalf of the Davis Family and the IU men's basketball program, we appreciate the concern, calls, texts, and thoughts and prayers we have received. We are especially grateful for every doctor, nurse, and staff member at IU Health Bloomington Hospital."
On Sunday evening, the family issued a statement of thanks for the outpouring of support.
"Devin's condition is improving and we know that there is a road to recovery ahead," the statement read. "We want to thank the incredible team at IU Health Bloomington Hospital for taking such great care of Devin. We also want to express our gratitude to Coach Crean, who has been by Devin's bedside for most of the past two days and to all of his coaches, teammates and the extended Hoosier family who have kept him in their prayers."
Holt, 18, was cited for illegal consumption and operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol content above 0.02. Holt registered a 0.025, according to the school. Someone is considered to be over the limit in Indiana if they have a BAC of at least .08 percent. If they are younger than 21 years old -- as was the case with Holt -- the limit is only .02 percent.
Sgt. Jeffery Canada of the Bloomington Police Department said Holt and passengers in his SUV told police they had dropped Davis off in the parking lot outside the stadium about 12:45 a.m. Saturday.
Holt was driving away "when, for unknown reasons, Mr. Davis came into the roadway and struck the side of the vehicle near the front passenger windshield," Canada said.
Police found Davis unconscious with a head injury on the street that's just off the IU campus. Holt's Jeep Liberty had damage to its passenger side, front fender and windshield, Canada said.
Canada did not know whether blood tests had been done on Davis, 19, to determine whether he had been drinking. Canada said that Holt had been consuming alcohol, but was not intoxicated.
Davis is a 6-foot-7 forward who averaged 2.4 points and 2.6 rebounds in 8.8 minutes last season. The 6-foot-7 Holt was a late signee who was set to go to prep school at Vermont Academy before he opted to play at Indiana this season.
Crean called off Saturday's open practice and scrimmage. Indiana opens the season Nov. 14 against Mississippi Valley State.
