Three star point guard Ahmaad Rorie chooses Oregon Ducks over Washington, Washington State

EUGENE -- Ahmaad Rorie, a three-star rated point guard, will join Oregon next season after announcing his college choice Thursday morning at his Tacoma, Wash., high school.

The announcement came one day after the deadline for basketball recruits to sign binding aid agreements with a school. An Oregon spokesman said Thursday he wasn't immediately clear whether Rorie had already sent in his National Letter of Intent or not.

Rorie committed to Cal in 2012 and signed with the school in November -- becoming the first member of then-coach Mike Montgomery's class to do so. But Rorie changed his mind in April when Montgomery retired and was succeeded by former Tennessee coach Cuonzo Martin. Since Rorie parted ways with Cal he had taken official visits to Washington, Washingon State and -- on Tuesday -- Oregon.

With Rorie, Oregon now has seven newcomers on its 10-man 2014-15 roster and three more scholarships to fill. Other guards in the 2014 recruiting class include five-star JaQuan Lyle and three-star Casey Benson. They will play alongside returning guards Joseph Young and Jalil Abdul-Bassit and forward Elgin Cook.

Oregon also has yet to fill its open assistant coaching position that has been vacant since Brian Fish left to be Montana State's head coach in early April.

The Ducks are in need of backcourt players after the dismissal of guards Damyean Dotson and Dominic Artis and forward Brandon Austin after they were accused of an off-campus rape stemming from March 8. All three were kicked off the team on May 1 even though the Lane County District Attorney declined to pursue any charges two weeks earlier.

"When you read the police report, it was very clear that this was conduct that wasn't befitting a University of Oregon student-athlete," athletic director Rob Mullens said on May 9.

The players' academic status remains in limbo as Oregon continues its own investigation.

Rorie, too, became part of the story surrounding the controversy at Oregon when he announced May 5 -- the day the allegations and a graphic police report broke -- that he would not be visiting Oregon that week. He went to Washington State instead, but eventually visited Eugene this week, and chose the Ducks, anyway.
