Note: At 1 p.m., Syracuse University officials released a statement confirming that the NCAA had cleared incoming freshman Tyler Roberson.
"He has been cleared by the NCAA and is eligible to participate as a full qualifier in intercollegiate athletics,'' read the statement. "Roberson is a member of the men's basketball team at Syracuse.''
Syracuse, N.Y. -- The NCAA has cleared Syracuse University freshman Tyler Roberson, opening the door for the 6-foot-9 forward to play with the Orange this season.
A source told syracuse.com this morning that the NCAA had approved Roberson's high school transcript, which had been held up for more than two weeks.
"He's fully cleared,'' the source said. "It looks like he's good to go.''
A second source with knowledge of Roberson's case also confirmed the NCAA's decision.
Syracuse's fall semester began last week, but according to the first source, Roberson is currently in Syracuse and will take classes for the first time today.
"He's there now,'' the first source said.
Roberson, a 6-foot-9 forward out of Roselle, N.J., has been waiting to see if his high school transcript meets the NCAA's minimum standards for incoming student-athletes to be eligible to play as freshmen.
Sources say that Roberson completed summer course work at Roselle Catholic in late July to raise his grades in order to meet initial requirements. Roselle Catholic officials subsequently said Roberson had satisfactorily completed the work and sent his paperwork to the NCAA.
Roberson averaged 17.5 points, 11.7 rebounds and 3.3 blocks per game in leading Roselle Catholic to the New Jersey Tournament of Champions title this past season.
