Redshirt Senior Jamail Jones Suspended Next Six Games

DUNK CITY, Fla. – FGCU men's basketball head coach Joe Dooley announced Friday that redshirt senior Jamail Jones has been suspended for six games, the remainder of the non-conference schedule, for a violation of team rules.

The suspension will begin immediately, starting with tonight's game against Furman (2-6). Jones (Atlanta, Ga./Montverde Academy/Marquette) will also miss FGCU's home contest against Ave Maria (Jan. 2) and road games against Iona (Dec. 23), Xavier (Dec. 28), Pittsburgh (Dec. 30) and UC Santa Barbara (Jan. 5). Jones was previously suspended for three games during the Gulf Coast Showcase (Nov. 24-26).

Jones – who has started all seven games he's appeared in this year – is averaging 11.1 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. He opened the season with consecutive double-doubles of 17 points and 10 rebounds against Nova Southeastern and 14 points and 11 rebounds versus UC Santa Barbara. Jones was one of three FGCU players named to the Atlantic Sun Conference Preseason First Team this year after finishing last season strong with averages of 8.6 points and 5.6 rebounds.

FGCU is off to a Division-I program-best 8-2 start to the season. The Eagles – who are ranked No. 17 in this week's CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 Poll and have an RPI ranking of 76 – have already defeated four 20-win teams from a season ago (UC Santa Barbara, Ohio, San Francisco, Massachusetts) and another (South Dakota State) which won 19 contests.

Jones will be eligible to return from his suspension for FGCU's A-Sun opener on Jan. 10 at home against Stetson.
