NBA Comparison: Ben Wallace (less athletic)

Matthew Maurer – 2/2/2007

Strengths: Excellent athlete blessed with good lateral quickness and leaping ability Extremely aggressive player who plays the game with toughness and a lunch pale demeanor Enjoys his role on the team doing the dirty work Runs the court extremely well Great finisher around the rim on putbacks and power dunks Defensively he has few problems guarding most positions on the court due to his quickness and strength Is a great help defender whose explosive leaping ability allows him to block or disrupt shots Has made enormous strides in his game since his freshmen season Emerging as a polished rebounder due to his high level of energy and willingness to hustle Attacks the basket with authority and can finish after contact Coachable player with a zeal to improve with a good amount of potential

Weaknesses: Offensively Mata is not a natural scorer who remains raw and unrefined Could stand to improve his post footwork which can be shoddy Needs to improve his hands as he has a bad habit of bobbling passes at times While improved, Mata lacks touch on his shot around the basket. This becomes even more apparent at the free throw line as he is a poor foul shooter With such energy, Mata can be foul prone in games as he can be overaggressive Needs to expand the range on his jumper as he is currently limited to put-backs and dunks Not a great passer due to his below average court vision Struggles to establish good position in the post Lacks a great feel for the game, especially on offense
