Friars' Kris Dunn cleared for contact

Men's College Basketball, Providence Friars

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Friars point guard Kris Dunn, who missed nearly all of last season with a second major shoulder injury, has been cleared for full-contact practice.

Dunn went through Wednesday's team workout without any issues to his right shoulder and told ESPN afterward that he is about 80 percent back. Friars coach Ed Cooley said that Dunn is expected -- barring anything foreseen -- to be ready for the team's season opener Nov. 15 against Albany.

"Physically, it felt great," Dunn said. "I'm just glad to be back on the court."

Dunn was a heralded recruit for Cooley and was slated to be a cornerstone piece for the program. Providence wound up reaching the NCAA tournament last season despite the fact Dunn was shut down after playing just four games early in the year. Dunn also missed the first nine games with an injury to the same shoulder as a freshman.

He will step back into the point guard role now that he's healthy and Bryce Cotton has graduated. The Friars return LaDontae Henton (14.0 ppg, 7.9 rpg) and Tyler Harris (11.6 ppg, 5.1 rpg), but have seven new faces on this season's team.

"We're young, but I think we have a chance to be a very good team," Dunn said. "It's been a while. I'm just happy to get back on the court."
