Pa. boys: Chadwin hits 600 wins at Abington Friends

The ceremony was quiet, and that suited Steve Chadwin just fine. The Abington Friends boys' basketball coach prefers to fly under the radar. And this 58-36 victory Saturday over visiting Masterman, the 600th of his career, would be handled no differently.

The ceremony was quiet, and that suited Steve Chadwin just fine.

The Abington Friends boys' basketball coach prefers to fly under the radar. And this 58-36 victory Saturday over visiting Masterman, the 600th of his career, would be handled no differently.

The postgame celebration may have been subdued, but the achievement was not. All of Chadwin's 600 wins have come during 36 years at Abington Friends.

"Nowadays, in the culture of high school sports and basketball, that's pretty unique," Chadwin said. "I'm not the only person who's done it, but it's a unique group."

Chadwin's career hasn't been marked just by its longevity, but also by its success. The Kangaroos have won 16 Friends Schools League titles, the last of which came in 2012.

Like the coach himself, many of those strong teams carried themselves with an understated manner, and that's what has made Chadwin the most proud.

"No one person was bigger than the program. We've had a lot of pretty good players go on to play [in college], but we've always had kids able to buy into the team concept," Chadwin said.

Coaching, in a sense, is the family business, and one he has no plans on giving up anytime soon. His wife, Sherrea, coached girls' basketball at Germantown Academy, where Chadwin began his career as an assistant. His son, Jamie, is the head coach at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy. His daughter, Jessica, coaches lacrosse at Villa Maria.

Both teach physical education, just like Chadwin.

"It's great that I'm able to do it, to still be able to coach and have kids create memories, not so much me, but for the team and the school," Chadwin said.

This year's team is young, and a work in progress, but it looked good Saturday.

Yohn Hall Jr. scored 19, and Jordan Baker had 15 to lead the Kangaroos.

Ches-Mont. Junior Carey Angeline became the first boy in Downingtown East history to score his 1,000th point in a 54-52 triumph at Kennett. Angeline, who holds several Division I scholarship offers as a football tight end, scored 31 points.

Inter-Ac. Only three players scored for Haverford School, but that's all the Fords needed to beat Episcopal Academy, 57-46, in a league opening triple-header at Philadelphia University. Lamar Stevens scored 27, Levan Alston had 19, and Cameron Reddish added 11.

Chris Anderson scored 14 of his 18 points in the second half, and Malvern Prep topped Penn Charter, 58-38.

Sam Lindgren's 12 points led four Germantown Academy players in double figures as the Patriots beat Springside Chestnut Hill, 64-35.

Nonleague. Neumann-Goretti shot 59 percent in a 93-82 win over Wheeling Park (W. Va.) in the Cancer Research Classic at Wheeling Jesuit University. Quade Green scored 31 points, Zane Martin had 21, and Lamarr Kimble added 20 points, five rebounds, and five assists.

Vaughn Jenkins made his presence felt in Cheltenham's 66-59 win over visiting Glen Mills, his first game back since breaking his hand in a season-opening tournament. Jenkins scored eight of his 12 points in the fourth quarter and had eight rebounds. Fatiir Al-Ahad scored 19 points and had seven assists and three steals.

Pennsbury used a strong third quarter to down visiting Holy Ghost Prep, 50-39. The Falcons went on an 18-10 run to break open a one-point game. Cameron Jones and Derrick Woods each scored 14.

De'Andre Hunter scored 21 of his 28 in the first half, and he also had 10 rebounds in Friends' Central's 75-43 defeat of visiting Freire Charter. Jonathan Lawton had 19 points and six rebounds.

Girls' Basketball

Nia Holland scored 15 of her 20 points in the first half, and Shipley rolled past host Imhotep Charter, 61-34, in the ISAA New Year's Tournament. Sophomore guard Yndiah Bobo added 17 points.

Inter-Ac. Kendall Grasella had 13 points and seven assists to spark Germantown Academy's offense in a 60-38 victory over visiting Baldwin. Lauren Oeth compiled 13 rebounds and seven assists.

Catholic Academies. Brigit Coleman scored 18 points as host Gwynedd Mercy eased past Villa Maria, 63-37.

Philly vs. N.Y. Challenge. Aubree Brown scored 21 points, and Bailey Greenberg had nine points and 12 rebounds to lead Archbishop Wood past St. Anthony's (N.Y.) at Lower Merion.

Nonleague. Bree Talbot went 6 for 6 from the line in the fourth and scored all 13 of her points in the period as Central Bucks East turned aside visiting Villa Joseph Marie, 60-46.

Noelle Powell's 22 points powered host Garnet Valley over West Chester Rustin, 61-35.

Lauren Pacifico's 18 points paced Radnor in a 59-34 win at Delco Christian.

Football

The West squad defeated the East, 39-36, at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio, Texas. The East team was coached by St. Joseph's Prep coach Gabe Infante and included Prep defensive back Jon Reid (Penn State).
