The third quarter proved detrimental Thursday night as Opelousas High dropped a second game to Peabody in as many weeks.

Peabody outscored the Tigers 20-8 in the first eight minutes after the intermission as Opelousas dropped a 64-52 game to Peabody.

Opelousas fell to 2-8 overall.

The Tigers participated in the prestigious Robert Horry Classic Basketball Tournament in Houston on Saturday night.

Opelousas was scheduled to play Fort Bend Bush High, the top-ranked team in the Houston area, according to Tigers’ boys basketball coach Jamie Rollins.

In Thursday’s Peabody contest, Opelousas trailed the War Horses 29-28 at halftime.

After that, the Tigers had difficulties, as Peabody took control during the third period.

Opelousas, which is playing primarily sophomores and upperclassmen who were junior varsity players last year, featured guard Terrell Lewis in double figures (18) along with senior Keenan Garrette (10)

Kaylan Coleman finished with nine points for the Tigers.

Peabody’s leading scorer was Kevin Norman (20). The War Horses also received production from Cedric Russell, (18).

Rollins said the War Horses proved more aggressive in the halfcourt game.

“Peabody got a lot of second chances and (Norman) is a good inside player who managed to get some second chance baskets and some layups on us,” said Rollins.

Rollins complimented his team for a good start.

“We played well at the start of the game. We were down by a point at the half and then we dropped the ball after that. In the third quarter we also had some turnovers that hurt us.

“I think most of all, we showed some of the immaturity that we have right now with our guys,” Rollins said.
