Minnesota added a nice addition to its future on Friday night as the Golden Gophers received a verbal commitment from Class of 2016 forward Michael Hurt. A source confirmed to NBCSports.com that Hurt pledged to Minnesota over the phone after head coach Richard Pitino and assistant coach Ben Johnson attended Hurt’s high school game with Rochester John Marshall on Friday night.

The 6-foot-7 Hurt chose Minnesota over other Big Ten scholarship offers from Nebraska and Northwestern. The No. 146 overall prospect in the class, according to Rivals, Hurt is a really nice start to the 2016 class for Minnesota. Along with guard Amir Coffey, Hurt is one of two major basketball prospects in Minnesota in the 2016 class and now the Golden Gophers have locked half of that duo.

A smooth-shooting lefty, Hurt showed off his skill level and upside at the adidas Unrivaled Camp in Chicago to open the July live evaluation period. He was named to the camp’s underclass all-star game in a camp full of national prospects and showed that he has the ability to be a high-major prospect.

Also of note, Hurt’s younger brother, Matthew, is an elite 6-foot-8 middle school prospect who is already playing varsity high school basketball and he doesn’t enter high school until next year. Getting a commitment from Michael is nice, but imagine if this turns into a family package deal that eventually involves Matthew?
