The Harry Giles III Blog: Cutting his list down, texting with Calipari, Kwe Parker's injury and more

Harry Giles III missed the entire 2013-14 season recovering from ACL, MCL and meniscus tears; since then he’s dominated the AAU scene, helped lead the USA U17 team to the gold medal in Dubai and turned in an even more dominant junior season at Wesleyan Christian Academy (High Point, N.C.). Giles, who is ranked No. 2 in the ESPN 60, is widely regarded as one of the country’s top players, regardless of class, with college basketball heavyweights like North Carolina, Kentucky and Duke, among many others, all giving chase. Giles has agreed to give USA TODAY HSS exclusive access into his world by chronicling everything from intimate details about his recruitment to his everyday life in a monthly blog.

What’s up y’all, it’s your boy HG back with another blog and the last week has been crazy so I’ve gotta fill y’all in.

First, I’m sure y’all know by now about my man Kwe (Parker) getting hurt.

He broke his foot in our win against Greensboro Day and he’s out indefinitely. We missed him earlier this year when he broke his pinky and that was tough, but, obviously, now it’s worse.

More than anything I just hate to see him go down like that because I know how hard he works and I know how much he loves to play. I know what it’s like to be out with an injury; I missed all of last season with my knee so I just keep encouraging him. I know it’s only gonna make him come back stronger and it’ll help him develop different parts of his game.

Now we’ve gotta have other players step up and I know that everyone’s up for the challenge.

The good thing about that night was getting the win over Greensboro Day. They beat us the first time, but we got them back. That was the LONGEST game I’ve ever played in my life. We played three overtimes and they held the ball the whole time. There were only two points on free throws in all of those overtimes. But, hey, at least we got the win!

We wouldn’t meet them again ‘til the state tournament, but we’re just focusing on whoever we’ve got in front of us.

I still think we’ve got what it takes to win another state title, we’ll just have to come together as a team and step up even more.

I cut my list last weekend too.

Right now, the schools I’m considering are, in no particular order: Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, Syracuse, UNC, Wake Forest, Ohio St and UNLV.

I just really like talking to all the coaches and getting to know them. I definitely want to have a close relationship with coaching staff at whichever school I pick.

I would have to say that, right now, I talk to Duke the most, them and Wake. I talk to Carolina a lot too and Coach Calipari text me the other day and told me he’d be down in the next few weeks so I’m looking forward to that.

Me and my boy Jayson (Tatum) joke about being No. 1 and No. 2 in the rankings. I moved up a spot and I told him I’m gaining on him! Haha!

We’re competitive, but we have fun with it.

I know he’ll be down here later this month for his Duke visit so I’m most definitely gonna visit there to check him out when he comes. Like I said in my other blogs we’re talking about teaming up in college with Dennis Smith so I’m sure we’ll talk about that a little too.

Of course I’ve gotta talk about the Super Bowl a little; I’m definitely a little tight that the Pats won, especially the way they won. That last play call though… I can’t even talk about that one. Crazy.

School is cool; everything’s going good with that, I’m just maintaining.

I’m excited about this week because I get a chance to go and talk to local kids at their practice in the YMCA league. I always love talking to the younger guys because I remember when I was younger and Chris Paul and those guys would come back and do the same thing. I was always real excited when they came back and showed love. I’m looking forward to it.

OK, y’all that’s another blog down!

Stay tuned for the next one because I promise it’ll be even more interesting!
