On Friday Pittsburgh saw its number of verbal commits in the Class of 2016 drop from two to one, as it was reported by Adam Finkelstein of ESPN.com that highly regarded shooting guard Mustapha Heron has decided to reopen his recruitment. Heron originally committed to Pitt in January 2014 in the midst of his sophomore season at Sacred Heart HS in Connecticut, and a lot has changed since that point in time.

According to Adam Zagoria of SNY, Heron will still consider Pittsburgh, and the list of suitors for his services are expected to grow now that the 6-foot-5 lefty is back on the market.

The assistant who impacted Heron’s decision to commit to Pittsburgh was none other than Barry Rohrssen, who was in the midst of his second stint on the Pitt coaching staff with a run as head coach at Manhattan separating the two.

Since then “Slice,” who has a close relationship with Heron’s father (they played together overseas), has held two different coaching position. This past season he was on John Calipari’s staff at Kentucky, and last week he was named associate head coach at St. John’s under new head coach Chris Mullin.

With Heron opening things back up, Pittsburgh’s lone 2016 commitment is small forward Corey Manigault, who verbally committed to the ACC program in mid-March.
