Michigan, MSU basketball recruit Cassius Winston of U-D Jesuit breaks wrist, out 6-8 weeks

DETROIT -- Detroit U-D Jesuit star Cassius Winston will be on the sidelines the next six to eight weeks of his AAU basketball schedule because he broke his left wrist in an Nike Elite Youth Basketball League tournament game in Houston on Friday.

Winston's father, Reginald Winston, confirmed the injury over the phone with MLive.

"It was in a game down at the EYBL," Reginald Winston said. "He went up for a layup and got hit, tried to catch himself with his hands."

Winston's shooting hand - his right hand - is fine.

Winston, a 2016 class point guard, is one of the top basketball prospects in the country according to many recruiting sources. According to 247 Sports, Winston is the No. 3 point guard in the country and No. 2 overall player in the state behind Josh Jackson, who now plays and lives in California. In April, at the Storm Classic AAU tournament in Grand Rapids, Winston revealed his top five college choices, in order, as Michigan, Michigan State, Marquette, Iowa State and Pittsburgh. He has offers from all five of the schools.

After taking Jesuit to its second consecutive Class A semifinals appearance this season, Winston went right into the AAU circuit with The Family team shortly after. Although the wrist injury is a setback for Winston, his father sees it as a way for his son to take a break.

"(He's handling it) as well as expected," Reginald Winston said. "He really wants to play but this really give time for his body to rest. He didn't have a break after the high school season. They went deep into the playoffs and a week after we started AAU, so, now it is a chance to rest."

Winston, the top 2016 guard in the state is the reigning MLive Detroit Player of the Year for boys basketball, averaged 22.3 points, 7.1 assists and 5.2 rebounds per game for Jesuit this last winter. He eclipsed the 1,000 career-point plateau this season, currently standing at 1,296 points. Winston is also 11 assists shy of 500 for his career.
