Thursday Basketball: Trendon Watford excels in Mountain Brook debut

Let’s take a look at five of the top storylines for Thursday’s basketball action around the state:

1) Successful debut

Mountain Brook debut.  Watford played last year at Shades Valley and transferred to Mountain Brook in the offseason.

Mountain Brook defeated Northridge 75-59, extending its home win streak to 24 straight.

Jack Kline, who signed with Alabama-Huntsville earlier this week, added 13 points for the Spartans (1-0).

Mountain Brook plays Shades Valley on Tuesday.

2) Defending state champ falls

Homewood, as the Mounties won 87-83 in overtime. Shades Valley led 25-11 after the first quarter, but the Patriots tied it at 76-all to force overtime.

Shades Valley’s Nadia Cathey with 20 points.

Homewood’s Hannah Barber had 25 points and 6 assists.

3) Nice start

Wenonah.

Micah Fuller added 17 points and seven assists. A.J. Johnson also had 12 points and 1-0 rebounds.

Wenonah’s Quinton Gates added 16.

4) Tournament finals set

Baker 80-61, moving into Saturday’s boys championship game in the McGill-Toolen Tip-Off Invitational.

Emanuel Ifill with 20.

Faith advanced to meet Darius Bradley had 10.

Baker (1-2) plays Escambia County on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Faith (2-0) play McGill Saturday.

In girls action, Khyli Rankins made four 3-pointers and had 22 points.

Faith advances to Saturday’s girls championship game, set for Saturday at 4 p.m.

5) Dialing long distance

Oak Mountain, while Oak Mountain made 13-of-23.

Homewood’s Wyatt Armstrong scored 13 points apiece.

Homewood led 68-64 late in the final minute, and Patterson and Peyton Brown hit four free throws in the final 19 seconds to secure the win.

Girls, Jordan Jones added 16 points and 15 rebounds. The two teams combined to shoot 63 free throws, with Hueytown hitting 12-of-23 and Helena making 17-of-40.

Girls, Mekayla Grimes had 11 points and 10 rebounds. Chickasaw will play Williamson on Saturday.

Girls, Kayla Myles led Alma Bryan with 15 points, making 6-of-8 free throws. The Hurricanes (2-0) play Citronelle tonight, and Daphne (0-2) plays at Theodore on Tuesday.

Girls, Kenjada Hutchinson scored 11 points.

Girls, Lauren Johnson had 15.

Girls, Kirsten Murphy had 14 points.

Girls, Markia Winbush led St. Luke’s with 10 points.

Girls, Mallory Messer led St. Paul’s with 14 points.

Boys, Trenton Lawrence led Madison County with nine.

Boys, Jamari Blackmon led the Bucs with nine points, as the defending Class 7A champ lost. Hoover plays Monday at Huffman.

Boys, Aaron Washington led Chelsea (1-1) with eight points.

Boys, Matt Mullanix led Holy Spirit with 16 points.

Boys, Derrick Bride led Citronelle with 17 points. Robertsdale returns to action Tuesday for its home opener.

Boys, MJ Embree finished with 13.

Boys, Cameron Moore had 11. Hartselle plays at West Morgan tonight.

Boys, Torey Brown had 10 assists. Carver fell to 0-2

Boys, Thomas Barnett led the Bulldogs with 14 points.

Mark Wilcox led St. Luke’s with 15 points, and Kevin Parden added 10 points.

Boys, Will Tricksey scored 11 of his 16 in the fourth quarter.

For Mobile Christian (0-1), Jordan Wilson had 12.

Boys, George County (Miss.) 51, Josh Lindsey had 14 and Jordan Davis 10 for the Vikings.

Boys, Skylar Hawkins scored 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, and Sheldton Crawford added 14 points.

Theodore’s Alonzo Moore scored 20 points, and Tyson Pruitt added 15.

Boys, Avery Wilson 12 in the Greater Southeast Showcase of Champions in Charlotte.
