Is there a team to beat for four-star Weatherspoon?

Four-star point guard Nick Weatherspoon had a big weekend in Atlanta at the second stop of the Adidas Gauntlet. The Mississippi native averaged 25.8 points, 4.8 assists and 4.8 rebounds per game for MBA Hoops.

Weatherspoon already had a healthy list of schools involved in his recruitment, but North Carolina became involved over the weekend and Roy Williams finished the weekend watching him play. The Tar Heels haven't yet offered but they plan to watch him closely while others like Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Iowa State, Mississippi State, Ohio State, and Ole Miss plus many others have seen enough to make an early offer.

IN HIS OWN WORDS: Weatherspoon broke down some of the serious contenders in his recruitment.

Alabama: “I love the coach, Avery Johnson. He’s cool. He’s been in the NBA and he has a lot of experience in the NBA.”

Iowa State: “I like how they let their guards go. They call a lot of screen-and-roll. They have a nice system with their offense and that’s what I’m used to.”

Mississippi State: “I know for a fact Mississippi State will get an official visit. I love Coach [Ben] Howland. He lets his guards go. He coached Russell Westbrook, who is one of the best guards in the league. I actually talked to him and he said Coach Howland really developed him.”

North Carolina: “I talked to them yesterday. They said they like how I play and they are going to keep watching me.”

WHAT’S NEXT?: Weatherspoon said he plans to finish up his last season with MBA Hoops before narrowing down his list. He hopes to have a decision in the fall after taking his official visits.

RIVALS’ REACTION: Given that he’s saying he only knows of one official visit and that’s Mississippi State, the Bulldogs should be considered the team to beat in his recruitment. He seems very high on Howland’s background of putting players in the NBA and the idea of playing with his older brother Quinndary in Starkville is intriguing. However, one of the few schools that could make it interesting is North Carolina. At the end of the day though, it’s still hard to see him getting away from Mississippi State.
