HUNTINGTON — Huntington Prep has added another high-profile matchup to its schedule for early March, according to Express coach Rob Fulford.
The Express and No. 1 overall Class of 2013 prospect Andrew Wiggins will take on Montverde Academy in a 4 p.m. contest on March 3 at Freedom Hall in Louisville.
Fulford said ESPN has been in contact with him about televising the contest.
The event is part of the Red State-Blue State series in Kentucky that allows fans in the Bluegrass State to see some of the top national recruits who will be venturing to Kentucky or Louisville for college.
Wiggins is the highlight attraction for the event. The 6-8, 215-pound small forward has Kentucky listed as one of his final choices in his recruitment and Big Blue Nation is reaching out to coerce him to make Kentucky coach John Calipari’s 2013 recruiting class one of the greatest ever assembled.
Wiggins is also considering Florida State, North Carolina and Kansas.
The contest will feature two of the nation’s best.
Huntington Prep spent much of the year as the No. 1 team in several polls before falling to Prime Prep (Texas). The Express are now ranked anywhere from Nos. 3 to 7, depending on what poll you see.
Montverde Academy (Fla.) is ranked No. 1 nationally — a post they assumed when Huntington Prep suffered its first loss of the season to Prime Prep (Texas) in the Cancer Research Classic in Wheeling.
In the same tournament, Montverde, who is out of the Orlando area, dismantled Simeon (Ill.) 82-53 to reach the top spot.
The Eagles feature Dakari Johnson, the No. 1 center in the Class of 2013 who committed to Kentucky during the Cancer Research Classic after scoring 18 points and grabbing 15 rebounds in the win over Simeon.
The contest will be a return for Johnson, who lived in Lexington during his middle school years.
In addition to Johnson, the Eagles also boast of Louisville native D’Angelo Russell, a 2014 prospect who still has both Kentucky and Louisville active in his recruitment, and Florida commit Kasey Hill, the No. 2 point guard in the country.
Huntington Prep’s Montaque Gill-Caesar, a 6-foot-5 shooting guard, is also on the Kentucky recruiting radar for the Class of 2015.
