Boys’ basketball: No. 1 Mater Dei rallies for win over St. John Bosco

No. 1-ranked Santa Ana Mater Dei got tested by St. John Bosco on its home court on Wednesday night, falling behind by seven points at halftime. But the Monarchs (17-0) forced 12 turnovers in the second half and came away with a 71-62 Trinity League victory.

Stanley Johnson had 21 points and MJ Cage added 17 points and 14 rebounds. Daniel Hamilton led St. John Bosco with 22 points and Tyler Dorsey had 20.

“I thought we competed and made big strides tonight,” St. John Bosco Coach Derrick Taylor said. “They’re just real good.”

Santa Margarita defeated Orange Lutheran, 53-49. Joe Furstinger and Devonte Klines each scored 14 points. Rogers Printup had 14 for Orange Lutheran.

In the South Coast League, El Toro defeated Mission Viejo, 61-57. Sean Harman led El Toro with 21 points. Chandler Hutchison scored 27 points for Mission Viejo.

In a Pioneer League opener, Lawndale defeated El Segundo, 80-41. Brodericks Jones had 18 points and 13 rebounds.

In the Mission League, St. Francis defeated Crespi, 54-48. Kyle Leufroy scored 26 points. DJ Ursery had 16 for Crespi, which played without Max Heidegger, who was sick. Alemany stayed tied for first place after a 52-35 win over Notre Dame. Brandon Boyd scored 17 points. Kevin Summers had 20 rebounds. Daron Henson had 15 points and 10 rebounds. Chaminade defeated Harvard-Westlake, 67-50. Alex Copleland had 21 points for Harvard-Westlake.

In the Pacific League, Burbank Burroughs stayed in first place with an 82-77 win over Pasadena. Ajon Efferson had 41 points for Pasadena. Amaad Wainwright had 31 points for Burroughs.

Chino Hills rolled to a 104-63 win over South Hills. UCLA commit Lonzo Ball had 22 points and brother LiAngelo Ball added 21 points. Nnamdi Okongwu had 20 points.

Santa Monica defeated Inglewood, 53-40 Travis Fujita scored 19 points.

St. Monica defeated Bosco Tech, 64-44. Dennis Ashley scored 28 points, making six of seven three-pointers.

In the Marmonte League, Newbury Park defeated Moorpark, 57-47. Tyler Cartaino finished with 18 points. Westlake defeated Thousand Oaks, 62-55. Marcos Soto and Isaiah Brooks each scored 16 points. Calabasas defeated Royal, 66-49. Justin Bessard had 17 points and Larry Bush 16.

Damien knocked off Charter Oak, 60-32. Jeremy Hemsley had 17 points. Oaks Christian defeated Malibu, 91-35. K.J. Smith had 26 points.
