The Virginia Tech men’s basketball team has lost one of its post players.
Virginia Tech announced Thursday that 6-foot-10 sophomore Khadim Sy has withdrawn from school.
Sy said in a text message Thursday night that he left for several reasons but would not elaborate.
Sy, a Senegal native who graduated from Oak Hill Academy, started 28 games as a Tech freshman last season but averaged just 11.4 minutes. He averaged 4 points and 2.7 rebounds. He ranked second on the squad with 20 blocked shots.
Hokies coach Buzz Williams said in a text message that he does not know where Sy is headed but wishes him the best.
The Hokies’ other post players are Kerry Blackshear, who sat out last season as a medical redshirt because of foot surgery; Chris Clarke, who suffered a torn ACL in February; 6-5 freshman P.J. Horne; and Nick Fullard, who sat out last season after transferring from Division II member Belmont Abbey.

Williams said it is too early to tell if Clarke will play this season.
Fullard was recently upgraded from walk-on to scholarship status. There was a scholarship available for him because the team never added another player after forward Seth LeDay opted in May to transfer. Seth LeDay wound up transferring to East Carolina.
Tech’s best post player last season was Seth’s older brother, Zach LeDay, who earned ACC Sixth Man of the Year honors from the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association as a senior.
Post player Johnathan Hamilton began last season with the Hokies but had season-ending thumb surgery in December and eventually left the program. He has joined Texas-Arlington as a graduate transfer.
