Pa. Boys: Fri. Pa. boys: Aflakpui sparks Carroll rally

In a game featuring ESPN's third- and 22d-ranked recruits in the Class of 2015, another senior might have been the difference in Archbishop Carroll's matchup with Callaway (Miss.) on Friday night.

Ernest Aflakpui sat out much of the third quarter with four fouls, but he returned for the fourth and scored 10 points to lead a come-from-behind, 76-65 win in the Marshall County Hoop Fest in Benton, Ky.

Aflakpui, a Temple recruit, finished with 16 points and eight rebounds. He helped Carroll outscore Callaway, 34-18, in the fourth quarter.

Derrick Jones, a UNLV recruit and ESPN's 22d-ranked player in the Class of 2015, also had 16 points and pulled in nine boards. Josh Sharkey led the Patriots, The Inquirer's top-ranked team in Southeastern Pennsylvania, with 24 points.

Malik Newman, the third-ranked senior in the nation, led Callaway with 35 points. Newman is undecided on where he will play in college.

Math, Civics and Sciences 79, Woodson (Va.) 74 (OT): After Donovan Barnes hit a three to force overtime, Samir Doughty scored eight of his 30 points in overtime to lead 18th-ranked MC&S to the win in Woodson, Va. Doughty, a St. John's recruit, also had 12 rebounds and five assists.

ARCHBISHOP RYAN TIP-OFF TOURNAMENT

Archbishop Ryan 56, Bensalem 53 (3OT): Austin Chabot drilled three three-pointers in the fourth quarter, including a game-tying triple with 42 seconds left, and knocked down eight of his nine free throws in the third overtime. He finished with 21 points and seven rebounds.

MEDIA SHOOTOUT

Penncrest 65, Chichester 59 (OT): A.J. Taylor made a game-tying layup with 15 seconds left, and Penncrest sank 11 of 12 free throws in overtime at Strath Haven.

RADNOR TIP-OFF TOURNAMENT

Episcopal Academy 66, Ben Franklin 47: Matt Woods knocked down five of six threes and scored 17 points for No. 23 Episcopal.

Roxborough 52, Radnor 48: Jovan Hammond scored 12 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter, including two game-clinching free throws. Hammond, who also pulled down 10 rebounds, helped Roxborough outscore Radnor in the fourth quarter, 21-13.

Upper Darby 45, Wissahickon 42: Jaris Fisher scored 12 points, Kahleel Henry had 10, and Upper Darby scored the game's final two baskets to pull out the win at Abington.

Conwell-Egan 58, Mastery North 31: Stevie Jordan had 14 points and six assists for No. 21 Conwell-Egan at Bristol.

Church Farm 64, Boyertown 41: Jon Axel Gudmundsson knocked down a pair of threes and scored 29 points. Fred Odhiambo blocked six shots and had eight rebounds.

Downingtown West 67, Upper Merion 46: Ryan Betley sank four threes en route to 21 points and Josh Warren had 14 points and 10 rebounds for 20th-ranked Downingtown West.

Holy Ghost Prep 63, Lancaster Catholic 49: Liam Brennan led Holy Ghost with 22 points.

SOLEBURY TIP-OFF TOURNAMENT

Solebury School 78, The City School 32: Curtis Thompson scored 22 of his 29 points in the second and third quarters and had seven steals.

Central Bucks South 54, Spring-Ford 43: Sean Gallagher had 11 of his 13 points in the fourth quarter, and knocked down seven of eight free throws.

Malvern Prep 67, Bonner- Prendergast 53: Will Powers drained three threes and added four steals and six rebounds to go with his 20 points in a home win.

Glen Mills 67, Truman 42: Anthony Johnson's double-double (16 points, 11 rebounds) led the hosts.

Martin Luther King 82, Sankofa Freedom 28: Jabri McCall had 15 points, eight rebounds, and six assists in No. 6 King's home win.

Del-Val Charter 51, Audenried 45: DaShon Giddings knocked down two threes to start the season and went on to score 14 to lead his team to a home win.

Engineering and Science 42, Palumbo 32: Johnathan Hall had 24 points, 14 rebounds, and seven blocks for visiting E&S.
