In the days leading up to Friday’s Jordan Brand Classic, USA TODAY High School Sports will be publishing diaries from players to document their experiences in New York City, at practices and events related to the game. This installment is with Muskegon (Mich.) big man Deyonta Davis, a Michigan State signee.

I’m been here since late last night. I haven’t had the chance to do any sightseeing, but I’m just looking to play basketball. That it’s named for Michael Jordan adds a little bit of juice.

With only a few days of practice, it’s hard. Some guys haven’t played with each other and you don’t have that chemistry. Most of the guys have the ball in their hands the whole time on their times so it will be tough to adjust.

My roommate is Henry Ellenson from Wisconsin. We’ve met before because we played against each other in the EYBL.

Since the season ended I’ve been getting in the gym, playing basketball, five on five. Getting my workouts in and working on my game.

It was a great experience to watch Michigan State get to the Final Four and now I want to be part of carrying on the legacy and lead Michigan State to a championship. It was an easy decision for me because that’s somewhere I wanted to go and it’s only an hour and a half from home and we have family there.

I was surprised that Caleb Swanigan committed to us. I thought he was going to Cal so I didn’t really know. I’m looking forward to talking to him when he comes here.
