theprophetParticipanti think you can argue either way. i personally would take the jazz. i think burke is good enough to start as a floor general in years to com and i love their front court. hayward is no scrub. burks still has to prove something, but he’s alright. he’s kind of on the fence this year imo of a make or break season for how his role will be in the league.
kyle o’quinn is a formidable back up, but i wouldn’t have included him as a legit starter. orlando also lacks a young pg.
both “cores” are incomplete, however, we will probably see both in next year’s lottery to find out another piece of the cores.

bdiddy5115ParticipantUtah obviously looks better when you list them like that (by position) as they have each spot covered, but the comparison is actually pretty close.
I’d likely take Orlando’s best-3 (Harris, Vucevic, Oladipo) over any combination of three Utah players. The reason for that is because Oladipo has more value/upside than any Jazz wing, Harris has the most go-to potential of any player on the two teams, and Vucevic has already proven himself to be a 13/12 guy. Nicholson, Harkless and O’Quinn have the potential to be valuable pieces, and Afflalo still holds some trade value.
Utah has a better cap situation, with a ton of $ coming off the books next year. Orlando has more dead salary weight, but part of Hennigan’s strategy is to surround the young guys with veterans to help them develop. It remains to be seen if this is a smart move.
It really depends on the 2014 draft. I really like Orlando’s core if they can score Smart, Andrew Harrison or another top-PG. Utah looks great for the future positionally, but I think they’re more desperate for an alpha-dog/star to lead their group.

moximusParticipantWhich team has the better young core between Utah Jazz and Orlando Magic?
Jazz:
PG – Trey Burke
SG – Alec Burks
SF – Gordon Hayward
PF – Enes Kanter
C – Derrick FavorsMagic:
PG – Victor Oladipo
SG – Maurice Harkless
SF – Tobias Harris
PF – Kyle O’Quinn
C – Nikola Vucevic0 - Posted on: Mon, 09/09/2013 - 11:33am #840729
MkadozaParticipantThe Jazz seem like they’re a star at the wing away (Wiggins, Parker) from growing into a formidable team. The Magic have a team in serious need of punch and ball handling, so maybe a Marcus Smart to pair with Oladipo, officially giving them the best backcourt from an intangibles standpoint. Either way, I agree with theprophet that both core are incomplete. I would rather take Utah, if only because Kanter can be a monster.

the I in winParticipantMarcus Smart and Orlando seem to be a match made in heaven, I think it will be one of those moves that everyone anticipates and it sure enough happens.

220ParticipantOn paper it seems that the Utah Jazz’s young core would be better than the Orlando Magic’s, but other than Gordon Hayward and Nikola Vucevic none of these players have had an opportunity to produce in a starters role/minutes over the course of an entire season. It will be interesting to see how each of these young core’s players produce in significant minutes over the course of a season.

Mostly because I think that Jeremy Evans is a good prospect too, he’s been the 5th big man in Utah for too way long.

scliddiardParticipantIMO, it’s the Jazz, I love the Jazz front court of the future with Kanter and Favors, I’d take them by far over the Magic front court, Vucevic is more experienced but I think Kanter will prove to be better, at PF Favors is better now and should blossom this year. Hayward best position is the 2 but he’s more experienced and better at this point even playing the 3. Harkless has to prove he can play the 2, not sure he can. Burks has a lot to prove though , that’s kind of awash. I really like Oladipo but Burke is a proven point guard and winner. If Oladipo can prove he can play the point I’d take him but that’s a big unkown. I like the Magic young players but not as much as the Jazz. This will be a season of discovery.

phila9012ParticipantAfter this year and next draft it should be completely clear who’s core is better. If the magic get Marcus Smart I would take them unless the Jazz got parker or wiggins. The Jazz are better now but the next draft will basically determine who has the brightest future because the Magic need smart or a good/great young point guard and the jazz need a legit future star on the wing.

ItsRainingNegsParticipantI’ve got to pick the team who will have the best player and, by far, it’s Victor Olidapo and the Magic. Without Olidapo it’s easily the Jazz but I think, in five years, Dapo will be the best two guard in the league.

TyroberParticipantI like the Jazz right now, but with the loaded 2014 draft I would like to revisit this next year. I don’t think the Jazz will be as bad as everyone says next year… they aren’t going to make the playoffs, but they won’t be the worst team in the league either. The Magic should get a higher pick than the Jazz so if you add Wiggins to the Magic that is a nice looking young team. Both teams need a couple more pieces and the 2014 draft will solve some of their problems.

the I in winParticipantI think that the core the Magic have is easier to assemble pieces around because of their versatility, plenty of guys could change positions to accommodate new talent, but like everyone else has said I think the Jazz have the better core.

CavFanPRParticipantBoth teams have very good young players but neither is going to be in the playoff hunt. I’d take the Magic for upside but right now the Jazz are a better team.

TheLastWordParticipantOn paper it’s not really close. All five Utah players are lottery picks, Kanter and Favors being #3’s. Oladipo is the only lottery pick on the Magic squad. If you were to chart out the odds of Orlando’s picks collectively turning out better than Utah’s, it would be astronomical.

HitsterParticipantThe Jazz are further along the rebuilding road and on paper their starting 5 looks stronger man against man in a majority of positions but collectively Orlando would probably close it up and I’d agree that to revisit it in a couple of years would be very interesting.
