I posted a report on another young Australian Prospect recently and this is a report on another player from the same Australian Youth League Competition. Michael Papandreas is a 6’1 point guard, physically he is not at the NBA level yet as he needs to add some more weight, but in terms of skill he may be one of the most talented in the country.

More well known by his nickname ‘Paps’, he possesses a lightning fast first step, blowing past his defenders with ease and completing these plays with an array of floaters and acrobatic layups. Another ability ‘Paps’ takes advantage of is his ability to finish while drawing contact, completing many ‘and-one’ opportunities over opposing big men. In terms of his shooting stroke, ‘Paps’ can be streaky, for a few minutes he may be ice cold but in a blink of an eye he can light up the scoreboard, while he is very capable of creating his own pull-up jumpshot ‘Paps’ is more confident in a catch and shoot situation

As a point guard Papandreas is very unselfish with the ball, making sure he gets other teammates involved and displaying great court vision as well as great handles. On defense Michael is able to force opposing guards into numerous turnovers due to his large wingspan as well as getting up in the passing lanes and picking off errant passes.

Despite these qualities, ‘Paps’ does have weaknesses, on defense he sometimes gambles too much for steals which leaves him caught out and vulnerable. Also, while he is able to get into the paint and finish he sometimes looks to draw the foul, rather than just make the simple play. As well as this his shooting as mentioned above can be thought of as streaky at best.

Despite having these weaknesses, ‘Paps’ is a very talented point guard of the future, it is rumoured that St. Mary’s is interested in his services in the near future and he will be undertaking a visit to the campus at the end of the year. Michael is 1992 born and looks to be potentially a solid prospect in Europe, or possible even the NBA. My NBA comparison? Fellow Aussie Patrick Mills

    Cheers, Neville

That is a pretty good comparison, I can see where you are coming from with Brooks being a streaky shooter and what not yet also being aggressive in the lane, I will see if I can get some video of this guy for you

Mitch Creek played some good ball recently and I think he is looking for a college for next year, as for Stephen Weigh, he returned here to Australia and he is now playing for the Perth Wildcats, last years champs. He is a quality player though, had a chance to make the Boomers when Ingles and Newley weren’t available

Yeah Weigh has actually really impressed me from the few Wildcats games I’ve watched this season. I think he could be a role player on a playoff team. That said, his athleticism isn’t great, which is probably what is holding him back. I bumped into him at a local court a few months ago actually.
