Looks like the Wolves are committed to making Dunn the long-term starter in Minnesota. They want someone for Rubio who could be a "bridge" until Dunn’s ready. Apparently the Kings are interested, but there hasn’t been progress on a deal. Shabazz Muhammad could also be part of a deal.

Thoughts? Personally, despite his somewhat lackluster showing so far, I’m still high on Dunn and I think the Wolves are making the right move should the deal actually materialize. My concern is that if you make the move with Sacramento, are you going to get equal value? Darren Collison is serviceable enough to be a "bridge" for Dunn, but if Muhammad is part of the deal too, how do you justify it?

It looks like Thibs views Dunn as the future but not yet. I’d question that as the T-Wolves are a young side put Dunn in and let him learn, it’s not like there are stars there whose championship window is closing and they are win now.

One immediate deal that sprang to mind is Rubio for Rondo plus an asset. Rondo worked with Thibs at Boston alongside Doc Rivers and the Big 3. Rondo isn’t the player that he was but he can surely still create for Wiggins, KAT and co. Thibs would like Rondo’s defensive game and linking up with Thibs could be good for Rondo.

Chicago send a pick or a young piece, they own all their first rounders. Doug McDermott would be the sort of shooter that T-Wolves would like. Chicago get a younger PG who is on a reasonable salary and his contract runs till the same time as Jimmy Butler’s player option.

I am very low on Dunn personally, mainly because of his age. He is one year older or more than teammates Zach LaVine, Andrew Wiggins and KAT. Struggling the way he does is fine when you are still very young like Mudiay, not as old as Dunn. He was supposed to be able to contribute right away or soon and he is not, and his age suggests that he won’t develop as fast as younger guys, plus that when he finally plays like a borderline starter, he’ll be 26+ and in his prime.

I think giving Dunn more playing time should definitely help him develop but I don’t think it’s worth it when it comes at the cost of not developping your 3 young stars because they don’t get to play with an NBA PG while they are younger than Dunn, in deciding years for their development.

Especially when you are likely to redraft a PG on the upcoming draft (consensus being 3PG top 5, 5 PG top 10 right now, Minnesota likely in the 4-10 range).

Rubio-Rondo trade would probably help both teams, with Rondo’s issues in Chicago and the need of a proven veteran in Minnesota. Thibs might have that faith in Rondo not being the locker room cancer he is said to be. Rondo had his best years alongside a big 3 that plays in the same positions as LaVine/Wiggins/KAT. Not sure what the rest of the deal/sweeteners should be.

I mean Russell and Curry are both 28 and hit their prime in the last two years.  It’s more common than not that payers are in their prime in their mid-to-late 20s. And I would hate trading for Rondo, it’s a trade with two players that do the same thing; elite passing with terrible shooting and decent defense… Plus Rondo’s attitude can be an issue at times.

I’m super high on Dunn’s defense. He has the quick feet of Avery Bradley, the active hands of Shumpert and the tenacity of Pat Beverly. He can and will make an impact on D for the starting unit when he does start.

His offense, I;m a little bit skeptical. This guy lost minutes to Tyus Jones early on the season because he makes bad decision after bad pass after bad decision. He’s a rookie I know, but you would think his 4 years in college would help him become a better floor general.

Nevertheless, I still think Dunn is an upgrade over Rubio. Offensively (in the future) and defensively.

They won’t get much for a PG who can’t shoot and doesn’t defend at a high level.

Strange that if Dunn has good defence that Thibs doesn’t play him more often.

We also have to factor in this year’s draft T-Wolves could end up with a shot at another very good young guard.

Too bad Dengs contract is so fucking toxic.

I think a player like Rubio would help Russell tremendously.  So what, he can’t shoot.  He plays good defense and sets players up around him.  Russell needs to be used more off the ball and he needs to be relieved of his duties chasing around smaller, quicker players all game.

Whatever Rubio kills in offensive spacing for Walton, he would make up for by freeing up Russell on offense and defense.  And provide the team with some much needed perimeter defense.

How he gets to the Lakers is another story entirely.  They don’t have much or anything that the T Wolves would want.

I am more curious about the market that Rubio has.  Does it even exist?

i like the trade you propose with chicago, but what about a 3 team deal involving minnesota, chicago and denver?

    ricky rubio to denver

    mudiay to chicago

    rondo to minnesota

(plus the assets needed to balance the deal)

denver loves european players and mudiay although still about to turn 21 seems like he doesn’t fit there plus rubio could give them the push they need to make the playoffs; chicago gets a young asset and gets rid of a problem in rondo, and minnesota gets the bridge they want and a mentor to dunn (hopefully thibs can motivate rondo).

and going even further… what about a blockbuster deal between these same 3 teams? these teams have the assets to make it work for the 3 of them and i think they would all benefit.

butler has nothing to do in chicago as that team has no chance to win anything. chicago as a franchise is in the middle of nowhere right now as they can’t compete to really win and their star is getting into his prime so as long as they have butler they can’t rebuild but at the same time they can’t compete with that team, and if they put young players around him they waste their star; wade is 35 and will probably retire after his 2 year contract (if he doesn’t i don’t think he’ll contribute much anyways..) and rondo is a mess here..so why not rebuild right now using butler to get a lot of young assets??

minnesota has already their franchise player and the base to make a championship contender in few years. they just need a couple of changes to make the playoffs even this year or the next at worst..

and denver has been doing things pretty good getting a lot of assets and even fighting already to make the playoffs but they still need a franchise player to really aspire to something..

so here’s an idea that could work for all, off course it would need to be balanced with salaries and picks to make it work for all but the idea would be something like this:

chicago: they get zach lavine so they can star the rebuild mode and build around him..he’s averaging already 20ppg as a 3rd option so imagin if you let him go wild as the 1st one in a young team..the city would get an excitement not seen since rose draft election in 2008.. and the city would live a deja vu remembering MJ..

they also get mudiay as their future point guard plus young asset like gary harris or jamal murray from denver and shabazz muhammad from minny (plus picks).

denver: they get their franchise player in butler plus ricky rubio who could thrive with such good scorers and efficient shooters, just look at his last games in minny, that’s what he can do when he has the ball in his hands and is well surrounded.. now sum up to this team the explosion of nikola jokic whom is becoming one of the best and most efficient centers in the league plus all the assets they still have.. this would be a playoff team right away and could make some real damage..

minnesota: to me it’s clear they can’t keep their big 3..it just doesn’t work as everyone fights on his own and the team becomes a mess..just look at the last games where lavine was injured..the ball was in rubio’s hand and they played as a team knowing everybody their role and knowing who is the franchise player and winning..with the big 3 they all compete to be the franchise player and it’s a caos..if they get rid of lavine and get good role players these team is scary..

so minny gets rondo, kenneth faried, danilo gallinari and mcdermott.

(like said above teams would need to take other player’s contracts to make it work but i think it could be a good deal for all).

starting fives could look something like this:

    chicago: mudiay-murray-lavine-mirotic-lopez (plus pick/s received)

    denver:  rubio-harris-butler-chandler-jokic

    minnesota: rondo/dunn-wiggins-gallinari-faried/dieng-towns

Rubio is a great player, and one that makes everyone around him better. I think being a phenom added expectations that were just to high to reach, and because of that people have a negative view of his value. No he isn’t a good shooter, and will never give you the 20 ppg you expect from your pg in this NBA, but he still has value imo. When you take into acount that his contract is actually good value right now, I think he is a valuable asset.

Rubio needs to go to a team that can utilize his skillset, and that means he needs to go to a team that pushes the pace and has shooters at all positions. Because of that, and what the Wolves are looking for in return, I think the best teams to do business with are the Nets, Pelicans, and to a lesser extent the Heat.

I think the Nets make the most sense imo and a Lin for Rubio swap could benefit both teams. Rubio goes to a team that pushes the pace, and is in a bigger market (remember, he never wanted to go to Minny and really wanted to go to a big market), and Lin gets to go play for a good coach, and play for a team that needs a pg that can break down the D and kick it out to open players.

A trade like Rubio, Shabazz for Lin, Scola makes both teams better. The Nets get a good bench scorer who is young in Shabazz, and a good pass first PG to help give the athletes on their team a chance to score in transition and on cuts. Likewise Lin and Scola would provide great leadership, floor spacing, and give the Wolves the stopgaps they are looking for.
