Will Marc Gasol start playing well? Can we trade him back for JV?

Wondering if this is what we get from Gasol or is it gonna get better? Not sure theres anything he does better than Valanciunas aside from passing the ball to players that cant make shots...Raptors traded their best post defender, best rebounder, most effecient scorer and a guy they could dump the ball down low to and get easy buckets for another perimeter player that cant make jumpshots.

Yeah I get it. He is smarter, more experienced and more vocal. But he also settles for contested shots he cant make, doesnt work down low in the gritty areas, flops and passes the ball to guys where they wont be successful. Alot of this is amplified by him getting used to his teammates and role but thats also an issue that should have been expected from a player who has only played for one organization and has failed to reach the playoffs for a few years now.

Since the trade.

Valanciunas

25 mpg, 17 ppg, 8 rpg, 2 apg, 1.4 bpg, 58% FG, 0.3 3PM, 30% 3PT

Gasol

23 mpg, 9 ppg, 6 rpg, 3.5 apg, 1 bpg, 45% FG. 0.2 3PM, 30% 3PT

We literally traded for a wiser but older version of Valanciunas that floats on the perimeter and isnt nearly as physical and takes and creates tough shots, ruined the chemistry in the lockerroom by straight dumping half the roter, got rid of our third big with Monroe. I was trying to be optimistic at first but its not looking good. My gut told me this was a bad idea.

Made this post know because

Made this post know because Ibaka is suspended for 3 games so we will se how well Gasol takes full responsibility at C. Especially since Toronto has noone else to play C. Boucher weighs 10 pounds. So they will be pulling Siakam and Anunoby out of their roles to play C which is ridiculous because it ruins continuity and means they have to spend less time playing with Gasol so he cant get used to their usual roles.

Chris Boucher? Before he

Chris Boucher? Before he got injured his senior year at Oregon, he was a potential first round pick.... he started over Jordan Bell.

Both Gasol brothers have been done for the last 2.5 years....

I agree

I agree with you. I'd take JV straight up between the two. You MIGHT give the edge to Gasol this year, but not any of the next ten. In addition you give away Wright and CJ Miles who are excellent pieces as backups. Plus you throw in a second rounder? Toronto got fleaced.

So I haven’t had a chance to

So I haven’t had a chance to watch much gasol with the raptors so far, but you had to know he wasn’t going to come in a put up the same kind of numbers he did in a featured role with the grizzlies. Likewise, valanciunas was likely to see a spike in production going to a tanking team like the grizzlies. So I wouldn’t put too much stock in the numbers at this point.

I believe the idea behind getting gasol for Toronto was that he would give them a better defender to anchor their defense against certain lineups and a guy they could potentially run their second unit offense through for stretches when kawhi is out of the game. I am kind of skeptical how much he really improves their team or how big of a role he will ultimately play come playoff time, but we will see. Valanciunas’ defense had been a major liability for Toronto in the past few postseasons anyway, and for a team that is clearly all in for this season the hope is that even a declining gasol can make more of a positive impact.

The solution to his defensive

The solution to his defensive problems in space was shifting Ibaka to C. Ibaka gaurds mobile bigs, Valnciunas gaurds big bigs.

Its not as much about the

Its not as much about the stats, the touches or even him getting used to his new teammates. I shouldnt have posted the stats obviously JV's will look better thats not a fair way to explain my point.

The problem is Gasol is a perimeter player. More than 50% of his offense is jumpshots. He's a playmaker passing the ball to guys who cant shoot and demands touches whereas JV could give you 20 points on offensive rebounds and pick and rolls in 20 minutes. We have tons of playmakers we needed a C that could finish. Raps were on pace for 70 wins before JV got injured, it was a stupid traded they shouldve just welcomed him back into the lineup and rolled with it.

They added the wrong guys to change the culture. Gasol is another guy that complains and flops when things dont go his way. Lin is soft and has the same mental issues as Derozan I can see it already. Rebounding will be an issue. If the Celtics/Bucks dont beat them the Warriors will unless injuries.

The trade was a

The trade was a head-scratcher for me to begin with. I feel like it made more sense if it was 3-5 years ago. Gasol is borderline retired at this point, while JV is just entering his prime.

Plus to go from having a whole team built around you to being a role player is probably a big reality check for Gasol.
