Lakesideben – great recent topic on vertical leap records.  The thread looked pretty popular and it’s dying down so I wanted to continue this… the mystery and lack of evidence out there is driving me to find some answers. From what I see online,  DJ Stephens had a 40" no step and 46" max vert. The claim Shaq reached 12’9" is believable, but I wanted to check out where some of these other numbers have come from, particularly claims that Wilt had a 48" very and Muggsy had a 44".

Google cannot be trusted,  and Wilt bragged about everything so you can’t believe a thing he ever said either,  but I found this YouTube video that shows he could definitely get up –

Muggsy getting up is more of a mystery. There is a rumour in the early 90s he threw down in one pregame warm up. I’ve seen an image of him in the air reaching above the rim grabbing a ball, Manure actually standing flat footed and holding it above the rim for the photo. It looks like it was probably shot on an angle though.

The challenge has been set – if any group of NBA tragic can find evidence it has to be the group on this site. What have you got?

By the way, if you didn’t see the article by Marc Stein talking about how Boris Diaw beat Amare’s vert record with cappucino and flip flops, here’s a link to part of the story –

That vid shows an over 7′ tall man with his head a few inches from the rim. That’s maybe 32" off the ground at most. Anyone who believes that he could add another 16" to that is a moron.

But a 7 foot guy with his head a few inches above a ten foot rim is higher that 32 inches. (I think. Haha… I hate math.

It was a few inches below the rim, and 32" was being generous.

I can’t remember if it was in a real game or not, but I saw it. Muggsy barely, barely dunked it. Almost like a layup where he grabs the rim. Still impressive. Most 6’4” humans can’t dunk. Remember, we live in a basketball bubble.

There’s absolutely no evidence of any of this, and memories are unreliable. They said the same thing about Earl Boykins, but any time hewas asmed to prove it he declined with a lame excuse. It’s just common sense, y’all.

Spud was 5’7" and dunked easily. It’s not unrealistic to think Muggsy could throw down, only 4 inches shorter. Wilt didn’t have a 48" very, I agree, but if you look at his reach (the vid shows his length) he would’ve went close to Shaq’s 12’9" mark

Spud Webb was an absolute freak of nature athletically, Bogues was not. If Bogues could’ve dunked, there’d be footage. Chamberlain wouldn’t have been much over 12′, and that’s being generous. I’m not sure why this is so hard for people to understand. It’s literally basic math and common sense.
