DolanCareParticipantI don’t see a scenario in which OKC receives major assets for dishing Chris Paul. I think their only hope is mild cap relief, and mayyyybe one youngish player with untapped potential.
What about this three team trade? It involves Dallas and Chicago
OKC gets Zach Lavine ($19.5MM for 3 years) and Courtney Lee ($12.8MM for 1 year)
Chicago gets Tim Hardaway ($20MM for 2 years)
Dallas gets Chris Paul ($38.5MM for 4 years)
This hypothetical deal is tale of cap space. OKC gets cap relief after next season, and then major cap relief one year before the CP contract ends. Plus, they get a shot to capitalize on Zach Lavine.
Chicago gets a solid veteran, the chance to give Coby White more playing time, and most importantly – cap relief one year before Lavine’s contract comes to an end.
Dallas does not get cap relief, but a focused point guard who would thrive in Carlisle’s sophistacated offense.

halfdecayedParticipantWhy would the Bulls trade Lavine for Hardaway lol.

HitsterParticipantDallas want the ball in Luka’s hands so no logic in them taking CP3 IMO.
The one team I could see having a look at him are the Knicks, they got no star names in FA really and CP3 to help feed RJ would make some sense to me. What they would send back I don’t know, Presti might get one younger asset or a pick but it may have to wait until some of the PF influx become tradable and be some shorter or expiring deals mainly to give OKC extra cap space.

Dazzling Dunks and Basketball BloopersParticipantThe Knicks are positioning themselves to have maximum cap space in 2021. Taking on cp3s contract would take them out the running (not to mention the fact that I doubt he’d have any interest in playing there).
Miami still makes the most sense to me. They already swung big on butler and could jump all in with Paul if they feel that gives them a serious chance to contend right away. They could send dragics expiring deal and one of their young assets to okc (maybe Herro or Winslow). Okc could also throw in one of their acquired picks to sweeten the deal. The problem would be that even with Paul they probably still don’t amount to serious contenders in the east and they would be hamstrung long term in their ability to improve the team through free agency.

The GoatParticipantThere’s hardly anywhere CP3 can go in a trade. I’m done with hearing about this guy already, I feel it’s going to turn into a saga. It’s been clear for 2 years he’s on the downturn, but he doesn’t seem to get it. Shades of Melo with him.
Both have a high opinion of themselves and both will not take lesser roles, which is why CP3 is at the start of the same road Melo started on a couple of years ago.
You got a big ass bag of buyout money available to bring with you if you bargain hard enough, so CP3, do everyone a favor, keep your ego in tact, just work something out and go. Pick up Melo"s crying ass and keep walking that road. It goes to China.

HobbyOGParticipantI’ve read Miami will only take CP3 if OKC sends back Miami first round picks…The league knowing that OKC has all of those picks they’ll have to include some to get rid of this terrible contract.

juves4783Participantthat trade idea is a joke, right?
okc would be lucky to rid paul for one-year salary dumps but reality is they will probably have to add more to pot, like some draft picks. the only teams that i think could pull off these deals are minny, detroit and miami because they have big salaries for marginal players (teague, dieng, covington, reggie jackson, snell, galloway, james johnson, olynyk, dragic, meyers leonard).

chrispaulwallParticipantbeen a cp3 fan my whole life but realistically, no one should give up any positive asset for his contract. its not looking good for him lol. but honestly, that’s on him for prioritizing money over winning. he had to know at this stage of his career making that kind of money would be an untradeable contract in the not too distant future and it has come to fruition. he’s still a great vet and one of the all timers, but unless he wants to agree to a buyout, give up tons of money and go to LA, its over

mowestenParticipantSo to be clear about what we are talking about, if OKC wants to rid themselves of Paul’s contract, they will have to include the draft picks they just received for Westbrook?
So at the end of the day, they traded Westbrook for the right to no longer have Westbrook, and essentially have, well, nothing of consequence to show for Harden, Durant, Sabonis, Oladipo, Westbrook, etc., etc.
Sounds solid.

Dazzling Dunks and Basketball BloopersParticipantThey aren’t going to be able to roster all the draft picks they acquired anyway and the chances of their own picks being higher in the draft will likely be better if Paul isn’t on the roster. If giving up one or 2 of those picks is the price for getting Paul’s contract off the books and truly rebuilding than it could easily be worth it.

LOFTYParticipantI think their plan will be to move up in the lottery each of those years and that is highly likely with the amount of draft picks they have. Every single year we see teams move up in the draft

HawklanParticipantPaul isn’t worth the money he gets! As simple as that.

kobyzParticipantBut it’s not like they aren’t giving up a bad contract as well in bledsoe, they just paying more for a better chance to win title which could be the difference between Greek Freek staying or not…

HitsterParticipantWith CP3’s age and salary it will be hard to move him. A team could take a punt on him with the idea that they potentially stretch or buy out his last year.
But to make the salaries match in any trade is hard. Maybe the Thunder have to play with the current line up for a year and then see what offers might be out there for a trade or if CP3 would accept a buy out having earned a further year’s money.
