I’ve posted multiple times my affinity for Darius Garland. Garland is far from a perfect prospect…. but I really like his potential in the pros. So here’s a little something I came up with if Orlando is able to retain Nick Vucevic this offseason: If Nick walks, then this trade becomes less likely.

Orlando Receives – 5th pick & David Nwaba

Cleveland Receives – Mo Bamba & 17th pick

    Why Cleveland does this deal:

Cleveland got some pretty good play from Sexton down the stretch…. so unless they are in love with Coby White or Garland they would probably benefit selecting a big man in this draft & keeping Collin. Bamba did have somewhat of an underwhelming year last season…. but he’s still has potential and would help Cleveland’s rebuild with some roster balance. I would then target Brandon Clarke or Sekou Doumboya with #17.

Orlando needs a point guard of the future. Pinning their hopes on Markelle Fultz is not prudent….. so having a young guard to push Fultz & provide some additional playmaking / shooting would be huge for this team moving forward. Garland fits the mold IMO, as the offense would still run through Vucevic & Gordon, and Garland can play off them or provide playmaking relief early-on.

    What do you all think?

Shouldn’t they be trying to take the next step? Like they were finally a team last year, played well. A rookie PG will change everything. Nevermind I don’t see why the Cavs do that trade. If I’m the Magic hope that NAW falls to 17, heck I think Herro can play some PG. Bamba’s trade value just isn’t great right now after that season. He wasn’t great, his shooting was bad and he got injured.

It’s an interesting idea. I like it for Orlando. If they are going to sign vucevic to a long-term deal they should probably look to move bamba. I don’t think you can play the two of them together.

Cleveland just needs talent on their roster. There are so many holes that they aren’t really drafting from a standpoint of fit. I guess whether they would make this move would ultimately come down to how much they like Bamba (who is still incredibly raw and unproven at this point) and whether they think he is better than the player they could get at 5.

That’s a hard deal to guage at the moment and could end up looking pretty bad if they want to keep Vucevic and he leaves. Assuming Vucevic stays then I’d call it a good deal.

The trade value looks fair but the Magic would be very unlikely to trade Bamba unless they knew for certain that Vucevic would resign.

Talking of the Cavs what would be their asking price for Colin Sexton if their GM Koby Altman decided to do a Hinkie and get best return for a good prospect. I’d guess they’d want a top 3 pick. I don’t see this happening, just a fun suggestion.

I think Orlando would pass on this. The Magic are trying to compete and although Garand (or White) have high ceilings, they are unproven as NBA players. Besides, if Bamba were in this draft he would likely be a top 4 prospect. Bamba still has a very high ceiling and is even if Vuc resigns, Bamba would be nice to have around as a back-up or an injury replacement if Vuc gets hurt. If Orlando is looking to upgrade at the point, free agency would probably best their best option as they can sign a proven player (Terry Rozier perhaps?) who fits the teams more immediate plans.

I don’t think the Magic give up on Bamba yet. They got Fultz, who is essentially their rookie this year, and 17 is a free hit. They can look at NAW or Herron, as mentioned earlier, but I actually like Mokoka for them. He’s very good defensively and athletically and he’d be a good fit with Bamba under Clifford.

If Cleveland want a big and don’t want to draft one at #5, they could trade down with someone like Atlanta and ask for assets back like Prince + pick.

I don’t think the cavs give up on Culver either.

They badly need his skillset , they also have 5 bigs under contract, and the 26th pick to boot.

BTW Nwaba is a free agent.

But yeah Garland would have been nice for your magic.

Alternative scenario, stretch Mozgov’s contract to gain an extra 10MD in cap space, keep your Bamba, sign Rozier, resign Vucevic, draft the best shooter you can get at 17, overrate cam Johnson if necessary.

You’ll lose Ross, gain Fultz, Rozier, a depth vet, a depth rookie, a healthy Bamba, your U-25 guys are not in their prime, there’s room to improve.
