so the cavs make off with a second round pick to cover their concerns about IT’s hip. I know people will jump up and down about how this went down but for me this is a huge win for Koby Altman. The news cycle for the next 12 months will be about Lebron staying/leaving but lebron must feel good with this guy in charge. He came in after Griffin was fired and the team that had made the finals past 3 years looked like a basket case  and on the verge of mass destruction. Now this may or may not end up a good deal for the cavs but instead of sitting on his hands and letting it fester he has been proactive and has ended up alleviating one problem (an unhappy star) and added a freshness to a team that looked like it needed it. Well played sir!

The Cavs GM will be out of a job very soon, it’s almost like they hired this guy to sabotage the team.. If GMs stop taking Hinkies calls they will certainly stop entertaining the new Cavs GM, He literally just pissed in his own swimming pool.

Go and have a look what the pacers got for paul George, or even better yet have a look what the thunder got for KD. If you think other GMs around the league are jumping up and down about the way Altman has done business with the celtics your kidding yourself. If anything I’m sure they are happy to see another asset gone from the celtics, albeit a 2nd rounder that will more than likely have career highlights in Europe or the D league

Agents won’t be too happy too after they just dragged Isaiah Thomas’ name through the mud.

To me getting a 2nd round pick seems more of Cleveland trying to save face after making the big announcement of their concern with Isaiah Thomas’s hip. I’m sure Cleveland asked for Brown, Tatum, and another first rounder all of which Boston rejected. I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that Danny Ainge said he wouldn’t give them more than a 2nd round pick.

I agree with that. Still a good haul for someone who went public about wanting to leave

Here’s the thing about this trade for Cleveland: If IT’s healthy, they are now a pretty good team *without LeBron on the floor.*

In fact, one could argue that on paper, a Cavs team minus LeBron and led by IT, Crowder and Love is just as good as last year’s Celtics team led by IT, Crowder and Horford.

My point isn’t that there’s some sort of silver lining, other than the Brooklyn pick, if LeBron leaves. That would be disastrous. The point is they can reduce LeBron’s minutes now. They can feel more comfortable giving him nights off. He doesn’t always have to guard the other team’s best wing scorer anymore. All that could pay off in the finals.

There was absolutely no way they were getting brown, tatum, or another potential lottery pick thrown into the deal. If they insisted on that, the Celtics would have pulled out of the deal and rightfully so. Cleveland really couldn’t afford to let that happen since all in all this is a monster return for a player that already expressed his desire to be traded anyway (despite the concerns about it’s hip). Nothing is ever guaranteed and it’s possible that IT is out for an extended period of time and doesn’t get back to 100 percent at all next season. However, by the same token, it’s also possible that kyrie could get hurt next season as well. You just never know.

Even if absolutely everything goes wrong for Cleveland next season and both lebron and IT move on in free agency, they still have an almost guaranteed top 5 pick to fall back on next season and a great trade chip in Crowder’s contract to jump start their rebuild. This is probably as close as they realistically could have come to covering all bases.

The fact that the deal is as good as it is when we take into account the public nature of the trade request is great. The Rookie GM did a 10/10 job. Everyone knew that ITs hip issue was serious, but he accepted the trade anyway. He let the Boston media and fanbase start celebrating a trade which I thought was already a great haul.

After Boston drew up the graphics with Kyrie wearing Celtic green and his new number 11, Altman called up and asked for another lump of sugar for what his doctors found. His coffee was already very sweet but the second round pick at this point is icing on top of icing.

Like others have said, check the returns on Paul George, Jimmy Butler etc.. The biggest loser is Danny Ainge and the Celtics for not taking advantage of the previous availabilty of those other superstars that went for pennies on the dollar. Great first move for Koby Altman.

Danny didn’t go after Jimmy or PG because he got Gordon without giving up anything but cap space. The losers in this trade isn’t the celtics at all. Kyrie takes over IT minutes. Kyrie is younger more talented and doesn’t have a hip injury. Crowder hated Gordon so getting rid of him made sense. Also frees up minutes for Brown and Tatum. The nets pick sucks but you don’t get All Stars who are 25 for nothing. Zizic doesn’t really fit in the modern NBA but he’s still young and has potential. This was a legit fair trade. On both sides. That second round pick means nothing you can only have so many players on a roster.

Adding Hayward + either PG or Butler would have instantly made them the favorite to win the East and probably have the best chance of matching up with the Warriors. PG was traded for Oladipo, Sabonis and no picks. Butler was traded for Dunn + Lavine and they swapped first rounders. So the Celtics lose because they spend more on a player that isn’t as good in a situation where they should have been able to pry him away for less.

If IT is sound then the Cavs IMO are stronger than last season as Crowder gives key extra depth and the Nets pick could give their Championship window extra years. Plus more importantly LBJ would not realistically find a stronger team he could jump to in FA.
