Just reported by Woj. Dude is a legend, very humble and a winner. He’ll get to keep learning under Pop. Great move IMo!

Joey Crawford is celebrating the occasion by also announcing that he will be making a comeback.

Some folks online r saying he might be Pop’s successor. But can his laid back personality be willing to critique players?

Becky is going to be Pop’s successor. She will have been the longest tenured when it is time for Pop to retire, and by then the Spurs will be almost forced to hire her as the first female head coach in the NBA. That being said, if she can keep Duncan around after that I think it would go a long way towards getting NBA players used to idea of "playing for a woman", not that that should mean anything at this point. If you know hoops, you know hoops. And Becky knows hoops.

Another good move was promoting Will Hardie. 1 of the smartest b ball minds in the business. He could be a head coach within 3 years.

Ric Burford has been promoted to CEO and Brian Wright is the new GM. I’d figure that he’d still be involved some way with the basketball side but maybe they are looking to freshen things up whilst Popp is still around. Brent Barry was bought in as VP last year two so they are making succession moves.

I’d be interested to know whether Pops might step back from HC role in due course but stay on as President to be there to oversee things when one of Tim, Becky or Will likely takes over as HC. I’d figure Brent Barry is being groomed to be next team President and with new GM in place moves are taking place whilst Pops is still around and Burford can oversee things too.

Will be interesting to see whether Timmy immediately becomes the "lead assistant," or takes more of a learning role behind Becky and Will. (I’m not sure if "lead assistant" is a defined job title on every team — when Messina was with Spurs he clearly was, but he was already a coaching legend in his own right. Sometimes maybe it just means whoever takes over when the HC gets ejected).

But Timmy has been with the Spurs so long (he still practices/works out with them frequently), is so smart and so beloved by other players … my guess is that when Pop retires the job goes to Timmy if he wants it.

Although if for some reason Budenholzer or Brett Brown were available (highly unlikely as Bucks and Sixers look set to contend for next several years, but you never know), as long time Pop assistants with actual head-coaching success, they’d be hard to pass up.

Interesting it is said that Wright will still report to Burford, I’d have thought he’d have reported to Pops or Barry.

Also the vastly experienced Chip Engelland is still on the coaching staff so might he take on the lead assistant role with the idea he stays in that role when Pops retires and they then promote one of the other coaches to HC role. That way they get continutity with Chip as the Lead assistant and he’d be an experienced right hand man for a rookie HC.

Chip has never taken a HC role so is likely considered more of an Assistant than a HC guy. Given his success with the Spurs, I’d have thought he’d have got HC offers if he wanted them.
