jerb2011ParticipantWatching Thunder PF Serge Ibaka’s play in recent weeks has really got me wondering what a good NBA comparison would be. I can’t help but think of Chris Webber offensively. His man defense has started to catch up with his help defense, his passing and decision making has progressed, he has a developing 3 pt shot, a developing post game, a strong face up game, and he is almost automatic in his mid range jumper, contested or open. What I’ve been glad to see in recent weeks is that he has finally realized how athletic he is and is dunking a lot more around the rim. An example of his athleticism, if not enough from the Dunk Contest, was his game against the Magic recently. Also that nasty dunk on JR Smith to be even more recent. I feel like if he continues to develop his ball handling, passing, and post game, could he battle for the best PF in the league? He’s only 24 years old in his 5th year in the NBA.

imAboutDatActionParticipanthe’s nowhere near the passer as Webber and he benefits from playing along side KD & westbrook.i love how he improved since he came into the league, but Webber during his prime was the main man defenses had to account for. Ibaka doesnt demand the attention Webber did.
he’s a good PF, but wont battle for the #1 spot. he wont pass up Blake,Adridge,Love,A.Davis in the PF rankings. even Dirk is doing great this year.

QuickPostCParticipantLOL this reminds of the time in a summer league broadcast where David Kahn compared Darko Milicic to Webber while TALKING to Webber. Webber almost came across the table and b****-slapped him.
Ibaka is a very good player….but everyone seems to downplay how skilled Webber was.

Sewok15ParticipantWebber was one of the best passing big men in the game. He could handle the ball tremendously and run the break from the PF position. He averaged 4+ assists per game for his career. Ibaka isn’t even averaging 1 assist per game this season. He had a better back to the basket game and scored 20+ PPG 10 different seasons.
I think Ibaka is a nice player with more room to improve but he will never be Chris Webber. Anthony Davis is only 20 years old and I think he is already better than Ibaka. Not to mention Kevin Love is 25 and Blake Griffin is 24 so it isn’t like those guys are going anywhere. Serge is a top 10 PF in the game right now and moving forward when Dirk and Duncan retire he will be top 5 with the other two guys I mentioned and LaMarcus Aldridge…but I just don’t see him with Hall of Fame/Best in the game potential.

Tongue-Out-Like-23ParticipantOh God… this is ridiculous.
Webber was one of the greatest PFs during an era where the greatest PFs played.

hoopscopParticipantWebber was a shot creator, a magnificent passer, the best passing big of his generation. Ibaka cant create at all, for himself or for others. Every time he tries to be creative you see a turnover or a bad pass. Widely overrated.

ph90702Serge Ibaka is a great third option on a championship level team.

JoeWolf1Ibaka was as close of a player to Theo Ratliff in his prime as I’ve ever seen. They played the same way, produced about the same stats, both made two All-Defensive teams. Lead the league in blocks etc…He was an extremely easy comparison over the past 3 or 4 years or so.
The thing is, Ibaka isn’t done evolving. No, I don’t think he’s in a Chris Webber level, but he’s a really good mid-range shooter now, and I think he’s surpassing Ratliff this season. He still plays like him, it just seems like he’s passing up the quality of player Ratliff was this season. His forte is always going to be weak side shot blocking, and guarding the rim, but now that he can do more, it’s not to say a 17 ppg season is completely out of his wheelhouse…considering he’s just 24 this year. He’s Theo Ratliff plus, IMO, he’s better than he was, but I’m not switching gears to thinking he’ll be a 20/10/5 first option like Webber or anyone like that.

HitsterParticipantIbaka is an elite defensive guy perhaps better than Theo Ratliff was at his peak potentially but I do like Joe Wolf’s comparision. But I agree that Ibaka will never have the offensive game of C-Web let alone his passing ability.

BlueLacesParticipantKahn actually compared Darko to Vlade while talking with him which Webber then sat in disbelief. At least this guy isn’t insulting C Webb like Kahn was Vlade. But still, the Serge-Webber comparison isn’t close.

SnowtaParticipantHe compared Darko’s passing ability to Vlade and basically said the start of Darko’s career reminded him of the start of Webber’s. Haha Webber avg 17 and 9 as a rookie. Don’t know how David Kahn ever got that job.
