I just voted on a poll on this site asking which International player I thought would be picked first in the upcoming draft. Ultimately I was between Schroeder the German PG and Giannis the Greek SF. I ended up picking Giannis because I felt that his size and skill set would be most appealing to NBA teams. I made my pick and the poll shows up, and who is the most voted player? Rudy Gobert! I’ve seen some film of this kid and I just don’t see it, he reminds me a lot of Patrick O’Bryant the #9 pick in the 2006 draft. Nothing special about him other than the fact that he’s 7’2 and has a 7’9 wingspan, he isn’t very skilled or strong, nor is he an elite athlete and personally to me it looks like he is going to have knee problems judging by his gait when he runs and jumps. If you do not agree please explain why.

In the words of Big L “I just don’t understand it..”

He has a lot of hype thanks to his huge wingspan. I’m not that high on him though. I voted for Schroeder as well.

The poll is which guy will be drafted first; not which prospect do you like the most. That’s the difference. A guy like Gobert will always be highly sought after in the draft where a team will hope to develop him and take advantage of his gigantic size. The other two may be better players, but Gobert has the freakish size and length teams love to take a chance on.

this guy can be great or bust! needs to put on weight a team will draft him 15-25 and keep him overseas for 2 years. Very tall with the wingspan will he blocks shots like Noel? NO. will pick up silly fouls. But teams will fear the height! On the offensive end he just another big man who likes to shoot jumpers once weight is put on he can easily get 12 points a night. DO NOT EXPECT 20
    & 10 NO WAY!!

Really Patrick O’Bryant??? I’m French and I’ll be the one to criticize him if he was no good but averaging 8pts on 75% shooting 6rbds and 2blks in only 20min in a pro League with a coach who doesn’t trust him a lot is good. I’ve seen him develop as he’s kind of a late bloomer and some teams will regret if they pass on him. He’s a hard worker, very good defender, with good understanding who can score with both hands. He’s gained 20 pounds over the last year, hired a nutritionist to gain weight and is very focused on being a top player. With the workout I think he’ll be drafted in the top 10.

I’d much rather have Dieng than Gobert. Both defensive players, but Dieng has much better athleticism and ability to defend on the perimeter and Dieng has shown flashes of an offensive game.

Gobert gets compared to McGee and Henson, but those are two extremely athletic and have shown flashes of skill on offense. Gobert is not just very thin, but appears to have almost no explosiveness. Gobert doesn’t elevate off the floor at all and moves around the floor really awkwardly. Gobert could develop into a decent NBA player, but his combination of very poor athleticism, poor strength, and limited skills doesn’t look good to me.

Not sure about Henson there, his vertical was within one inch of Gobert’s. He might be a little quicker, but is also 3 inches shorter and 20+ pounds lighter than Gobert.

Perhaps Henson isn’t super athletic, but he easily got off the floor in games and has some quickness facing the rim. Gobert just looks slow and gangly moving around the court. Henson appears much quicker. And while perhaps Henson had a pretty bad vertical at the combine, I bet his agility and sprinting times wouldn’t have been nearly as bad as Gobert’s were, had Henson participated. Henson also showed far greater coordination than Gobert does on the court.

Maybe the difference between them is not as great as I made it out to be, but too often I hear it claimed that Gobert is some kind of great athlete. For an NBA player, his athleticism is a significant weakness. Gobert’s movements on the court remind me of Hasheem Thabeet, and that is not a good thing. And I am not sure Gobert has the frame to gain much athleticism.

Something tells me he will be a good role player. I’ve never seen him play and I haven’t seen much highlights of him either but from reading up on him, draft profiles, stats and highlights I have seen on YouTube of him and his interviews he seems legit. Could be a good role player but definitely needs lower body strength for balance before we even consider him playing in the NBA.

He’s awkward but he’s not immobile or a stiff he covers ground really fast and often beats the other big men down the court.

He game reminds me of Samuel Dalembert by virtue of being able to consistently block shots, rebound and finish at the rim. I believe hell develop into a Hibbert type rim protector. He’s a hard worker who isn’t dumb and is already a pro so I don’t kno why people think he has a low floor. His presence alone will change games.

At the combine none of the bigs could score over his length. His world record arm length will make up for his lack of weight.

Hells gone block shots and dunk on people with them stretch arstong arms.

Length is length people. Respect it, and respect this crazy long power forward draft class.
