    Drop in salary affects buyout
    By Ric Bucher
    ESPN The Magazine

Spanish star Ricky Rubio’s move to the NBA has been complicated by his sliding to fifth in the draft, but the only options he’s currently considering are playing in Minnesota or returning to DKV Joventut, sources say.

Had Rubio been a top three pick, he could have afforded to pay Joventut more for his release, a source says. But the difference in salary between third and fifth in the draft is roughly $600,000 a year. Joventut reportedly is asking for no less than $4 million for his release.

Going to another European team is not a realistic option because that team would want a long-term commitment from Rubio and his desire remains to play in the NBA, a source says. Whether he can do that next season or when his Joventut contract expires two years from now is the question.

On Monday, new Wolves president David Kahn joined owner Glen Taylor in talks with Rubio’s agent, Dan Fegan, as the Wolves attempt to convince Rubio that they have no plans to trade him to a more inviting destination and that his long-term future is in Minnesota.

In any case, Rubio apparently has no objections to playing for the Timberwolves.

“This isn’t about Minnesota,” the source says. “It’s about the buyout.”

    Two questions…

    1. Do you believe that David Kahn really has no plans to trade Rubio and wants him to be the future of the T-Wolves? If so, why did he draft Flynn?

    2. Do you believe that Rubio really has no objections to playing for the T-Wolves and it’s only about the buyout?

    1. Good question. I’m lost on this one.
    2. I think Rubio would like to play for Minnesota. Its all about the buyout & the presence of Flynn

Tezo 83, if you take David Kahn at his word and he has no plans to trade Flynn or Rubio, you have to ask yourself if he’s competent as a GM. Is he the next coming of Isiah Thomas or Kevin McHale?

It’s an extremely rare day when an NBA team has both the 5th and 6th choice in the draft. Blowing that opportunity by taking two point guards almost borders on insanity. You have one of the greatest opportunities ever to start rebuilding your team and he completely ruins it by selecting two guys who play the same position. I’m still having a hard believing anyone would do that.

Unless Kahn has a plan that we don’t know about, he once again left Minnesota with a front row seat on the path to mediocrity.

In addition, when we look back at this draft with the perspective of a couple of years, I think taking Johnny Flynn over Curry will prove to be a huge mistake. Flynn is a guy who should have gone late in the first round.
