How is everyone saying he’s overrated?He has alot of hype but not enough hype that he’s the 1st pick guaranteed and no one is saying he’s a sure fire star. In live in Ny and even i dont know why everyone is under-estimating him, sure he isn’t a great scorer but he is very ra in that area he is a great playmaker with nearly every fascet of his game under-rated except his court vision, and that is only a single element of his game. Just because he isn’t a score first pg, or he doesn’t play like he’s in rucker park that doesn’t mean he won’t be great

My reason is that I think personally he has more flaws that don’t really help him translate into the NBA.

The upper tier guards have a combination of skill that Rubio doesn’t possess. Most guards that are elite have a combination of size, strength, skill, athletic ablity, IQ, and so on. Rubio has a fraction of those. I actually think he will be a decent player. He has a high IQ apparently, size, and basketball savvy all of which you can’t teach. My only thing is will it translate into the NBA. The guards in the NBA are just fierce. We can easily say that Steve Nash made it but Nash had an outstanding jump shot to compliment his negatives. NBA guards will play him close and smother him which won’t allow him to make easy passes.

Once again I think with experience and a developed jumper he will be fine but it will take some years before he truly starts to show his worth…

but dont you think he can be great idf he develops his jumper and gets stronger,and honestly i think he’s very quick(but many others dont) plus he is more athletic than nash,payton,d-will,duhon,calderon,and parker so i think he can translate in a few years

i’ll play the devil’s advocate on this one. most people on this site know im a huge rubio supporter but here’s what ive gathered on why people think he’s overrated (valid reasons)

yes he has been playing professionally since age 16 but hes never truly made an impact statistically. Growing up in that kind of system he doesn’t have the same excuse as jennings where he can say he’s still getting used to the style of play. and if that is his style then how will that translate to the NBA?

He played in the Olympics and did fairly well especially on the defensive end but he still played behind Juan Carlos Navarro who had a less than successful nba career.

He needs to develop an outside shot

When his team played Brandon Jennings’s team he didnt score had two assists and four turnovers while Jennings had his best game in Europe though im not certain they guarded each other.

Rubio is accused of being skinny and naive on offense. His nearly 1/1 assist to turnover ratio concerns people that he forces passes and just goes for flash. And his skinny 6’4 but only 180 pound frame would make him pound for pound one of the weakest players in the NBA.

Lastly, he hasn’t really met with NBA teams yet. He has a practice scheduled with the Kings but he didnt go when Jennings and Flynn were there suggesting hes shying away from competition.

Like I said, the things he needs he has to develop and look at how long it’s taking him to develop in Europe. If he has been playing since he was 15/16 years old he should have some kind of impact stat wise. The players in Europe are not that athletic and quick like the NBA. The NBA is going to be hard for anybody especially someone who doesn’t possess the combination of these elite guards. Note I am only comparing him elite guards. If we are comparing him to guards like Fisher and Alston to some degree then yes he will be perfectly fine because they match his skill set to some degree.

But my guess is that he will develop over time and be fine. Just not in the near future….

His stat’s are nothing extraordinary, even for a 18 year old. He is at best the third most valuable player on his team. He is also not that athletic.

He is good in the local Spanish league. In Euroleague competition, however, where it better resembles NBA talent, he averaged 2.4 pts and 2.3 turnovers a game.

He is hyped up because youtube has all these videos of him making fancy plays. People don’t see all his turnovers though.

As Jennings said, he is all hype because he has been a professional since he was 14 and because he played in the Olympics.

Rubio will be coming to the US today (June 13th). He will meet with teams but strangely won’t workout with them. He will be a bust for being a top 5 pick.

That’s completely wrong. I think he must remain 2 seasons more in Juventut de Badalona and then prove to go to NBA, but with 18 y.o. and a irregular season, he become 1st in steals and assists of the ACB regular season! Maybe better than overrated do you mean supersaturated?

Everyone says he won’t live up to the hype, well who does? LeBron James isn’t even from Earth. He’s like another world type of player. No matter what, people will consider him a disappointment because of all this hype he is undergoing. It isn’t his fault. He is just doing what he loves and trying to be the best.
