The NCAA has ruled Mississippi State forward Renardo Sidney will have to repay $11,800 in improper benefits and sit out the remainder of this season and nine games next season if he wants to play for the Bulldogs.

Sidney, a highly regarded recruit who grew up in Jackson, Miss., and played at a Los Angeles high school, received preferential treatment and improper benefits because of his talent, an NCAA statement Friday. The statment also said he violated ethics rules by providing false or misleading statements.

“Our members have made it crystal clear that student-athletes who receive impermissible benefits, either directly or indirectly, and who lie to the NCAA must be held accountable,” said Kevin Lennon, vice president for academic and membership affairs.

The 6-foot-10 freshman forward has been with Mississippi State all season, but has only been allowed to practice while the school and NCAA conducted an often contentious investigation.

Mississippi State coach Rick Stansbury said the school will appeal the penalty.

“Sid is a great kid and I’m glad we finally have a decision,” Stansbury said. “Now we can move forward with the appeal process.”

Sidney attorney Don Jackson said the NCAA failed to nail the player on major accusations that his family received free housing and a loan based on Sidney’s future earnings potential, so they accused him of lying to cover up wrongdoing. Jackson said the accusation hinges on Sidney’s memory lapses of a single trip he took as a ninth-grader five years ago.

The NCAA did not give specifics on the violations.

“It’s like charging someone with murder, then when you can’t convict them of murder, you turn around and convict them of speeding and charge them with perjury for saying they didn’t commit murder,” Jackson told The Associated Press.

Jackson also disputes the repayment figure. The NCAA said the investigation found Sidney and his family benefited from money from a nonprofit organization — an AAU basketball team — for personal gain, including free travel and accommodations, athletic gear and training.

Jackson says if Renardo Sidney Sr. took money and used it to buy food for the team’s players, but didn’t keep proof, the NCAA simply added that to the bill.

“They were basically amounts that [the Sidneys] could not prove how they had been used,” Jackson said. “But [the NCAA] could not prove they were being used improperly.”

Jackson says he has not talked to the family about Sidney’s future plans, but that it’s his understanding Sidney will stay at Mississippi State and play next season when cleared.

Mississippi State athletic director Greg Byrne said in the news release the school will continue to support Sidney.

“We felt from the beginning Renardo deserves the opportunity to be both a student and athlete at Mississippi State, and this is still our belief today,” Byrne said.

What’s next for this guy? Does he re-pay the benefits and play for the Bulldogs next year, or does he leave and take a chance in the D-League or overseas? By the way, teams overseas are only allowed a specific number of American players, and I’m not aware of too many coaches overseas that’ll take a chance on a young’n like Sidney.

Remember that he is now one year removed from his high school class and past the age requirement, so he could enter the draft this year. Don’t know who would be dumb enough to draft him though…

his father is to blame. there had been write ups years back about how his father would probably try to profit off of him and he did just that with his aau team. not sure what sydney is gonna do. chances are he will work out during the summer and enter the draft and get feelers to see where he would go and so far reports are that he will go late first round if he has good workouts because everyone likes his talent

He hasn’t played, and hasn’t been practicing since December. There is not a chance that he would go in the first round this year, and there is probably a good chance he would go undrafted. I think the smart play is to go to either Europe or the D-League. Maybe this is just me, but I would never pay the $11,800 and agree to miss a third of next year after all the crap that occurred this season. It is just such hypocrisy that the NCAA wants to throw the book at this guy, but lets Calipari leave Memphis for basically the full boat mid-level exception after cheating everywhere he goes. I wouldn’t go for it. It makes much more sense to spend a year to get back into it, get in shape, and play somewhere with professional coaching.

Seems like he’ll be coming back to play for Mississippi State next year, seems like a great move and I doubt he testes the draft because he seems like he really wants to play college ball, especially after all the trouble they went through to get him eligible, if he wanted to play in the league he’d have gone to the DLeague or played overseas instead of sitting and waiting around… I think he’ll take the league by storm next year although it would have been nice to see him and Varnado play together

They say he’s 300 lbs now….He’s going to need to show dedication and lose weight o have any chance of getting drafted. But knowing how dumb they’ve done stuff in the past, he might just declare for the Draft. He clearly has the talent to play in the NBA, but he’s out of shape and hasn’t played against great competition at all. RETURN to school Renardo.

No way he goes back, pays that money, and waits to play. He is gone, an I think he is a surefire second rounder. No way first round unless he is seriously impressive in workouts (unlikely). He is a lottery talent though, there is no way that nobody takes a flier on him in the second round just to see if he pans out.

Sad thing is, with all the negative attention he has garnered, I’ve yet to hear from a reliable source that he is a bad kid. I’ve heard about his handlers bieng dumb, and his conditioning bieng bad, but never heard that Sidney isn’t a good kid. Wish he could have just played his college ball this year and been a first rounder.

here we go again with coach cal. ..rose cheated not cal. camby cheated not cal. the blame needs to go to the person who we know did the cheating not the person we guess did something

Look, everyone cheats. I’m not saying Calipari is special in that respect. I’m saying that he not only cheats but gets caught, and leaves under the cover of plausible deniability. Giving Derrick Rose’s brother free plane tickets, hotel rooms, and a credit card for spending on trips is an example of Calipari cheating. It isn’t outrageous stuff, but don’t pretend that this guy isn’t cheating because there is no connection between him and the SAT stuff.

my thing is why keep assuming this guy is the cheater but never talk about the players who actually did cheat, int he post. everytime theres something about coach cal doing well someone says he cheats yet i dont see that in post when rose or camby is doing well when they are the main guys who cheated

I don’t think you can honestly think he’s not done some serious cheating…He’s gotten in trouble at UMass and Memphis. Those happened under his watch, therefore he did cheat. He’s been sanctioned both times at those schools and just up and left. That’s all the proof anyone needs man. The NCAA investigated both of them and I doubt they just sanctioned or punished those schools for no reason or with him not being that involved. No one can go show you what he did on hidden camera or anything, but if he’s been sanctioned twice for improper involvements with players, you have to tie the knot man.

thats the thing…as coach if it happens under youre watch then you are the one who pays the price even when you had nothing to do with it. i dont think itshould work that way at all. and im sure if you were the coach you would be pissed if you gotfired because a player on youre team got money from a booster and you knew nothing about it. who wouldnt leave when there is sanctions at the school?..you dont coach not to make it to the ncaa tournament just liek you dont play college basketball not to get to the nba. thats liek me saying why did rose and camby leave. if you are a cheater because of what youre players did then yea youre right. this is a problem here in the u.s youre guilty untill proven innocent. and then you get most of the blame even if the blame should be on the players who did the actual cheating. as far as leavign memphis…i mean really you really think he would have stayed even if there were no sanctions to go to uk?..who in there right mind wouldnt go to uk over memphis. im not saying hes clean but i cant say hes dirty either because i dont know. this is a reasont he word “alledgedly” is used so often in the media bcause no one really knows

He was found to have known something about it though. That’s why the schools were into trouble. If you were to talk about the story now, the word “allegedly” wouldn’t be used anymore because the NCAA found them to be apart of wrongdoing, therefore it’s written in stone that they are guilty of wrongdoing. Just like when the news says someone “alledgedly” killed another person, if they are found guilty, they no longer say it. They start calling the person a murderer from then on.

And they can play in the tourny. They’re records are just vacated from the 07-08 season when Rose played.

i dont see anywhere where it says he was found to know something about it. the school gets sancations if a coach knows or doesnt know about things. they are guilty of wrong doing because it happened under there watch not because they knew what was going on. doesnt matter if a coach knows or doesnt know a school still will get punished

Trust me, with all the people saying he’s a cheater on TV and even when I hear it on the radio, I think he would’ve cleared his name publically or filed a lawsuit against those who were “lying” on him.

this is why the rules need to change. a coach shouldnt have to pay for a player breaking the rules unless he helped the player do it actually a school shouldnt have to pay for what a player did. the other players also get punished because of one players greed by losing things they have earned like there record. even happens on the hs level , when lebron accepted things and the school had to forfit a win. that would make coach joyce a cheater as well

people in the pulblic are always doing the guilty untill proven innocent. coach has came out plenty of times saying he hasnt done anythign wrong.. google it. but you wont see the tv and papers telling you that. just liek how ron artest gives to alot of charities and helps kids but the news rather show the techs and the cheap shots here and there. tv and news convince alot of people to judge a guy unfairly. the smart people are the ones that dont just go by everythign the media says. the others just hang on to whatever they say and make a judgement. when i was younge ri used to do the same thing untill my boy got shot by a undercover and the media tried to make it look like he was a bad kid when in reality he was one of the smartest kids in our school and a future deacon

I don’t see anywhere where Calipari came out and said he didn’t cheat or get involved in cheating. I just googled and ask.com’d it. He never came out and denied anything.

I think the media can make people look bad in personal matters alot of times, but it’s not a personal matter here. He did wrong here and you’d have to be very naive to think that he didn’t have anything to do with Rose getting in trouble. Yes, every coach cheats and the media can take stuff out of hand, but Calipari cheated and got caught. Your defending him when he won’t defend himself.

the media makes people look bad in all matters not just personal. ive done a coupel reports on that when i was in college and that was years ago. and why does someone have to be naive to think he did something to help rose cheat?…its just out of the relm of possiblity that rose and soem of his family had someone take the test for him?..someone to think that didnt happen would be considered naive. ive seen first hand a player on my aau team that went to a major school have someone else take his act without the coach knowing nothing about it. coaches dont even set up the sat for a hs player. if anything the hs coach has more say in that then the college coach

i mean is it possible that he cheated yeah. its also possible that he didnt. some reporters are out to get some coachs more then others. was there any reports about elton brand driving a new truck out in durham that was his but in someone elses name?..or rahseed wallace driving a brand new lexus while in college that was from a boosters dealership but in one of his family members name even though the guy didnt have the money nor credit to get it. but the media didnt report any of that because of there love for coach smith and coach k. its possible that both players got it without breaking any rules and the coachs knew nothing about it. its possible that they did break the rules and the coachs knew as well. but the media ignored it

As for Rose, he’s playing in the NBA with the Chicago Bulls. He’ll have to live with the shame that he committed academic fraud, a major smear on his resume in basketball and life, especially if he goes on to a Hall of Fame career as many of us have forecasted. What angers me is that Rose continues to deny any wrongdoing, even though the Committee on Infractions revealed that he failed to qualify three times before finally passing a fraudulent SAT test in Detroit. Yes, Detroit. When someone travels 250 miles to take a test to make sure he qualifies to play college basketball — well, put it this way: I don’t think it was Rose’s idea. Someone had to be desperate enough to set it up for him, and the stench could go in any number of directions. On top of that, Memphis allowed Rose’s brother and mentor, Reggie, to fly on team planes, which translates to $1,700 in free travel. Yet, Derrick keeps doing the domino.

this is something i been trying topost but it wouldnt let me untill now. memphis was the one who authorized for roses brother to get what he got. rose is theone who should be blamed. theres no if’s and’s or buts about it yet peoplewant to ignore the fact that he cheated

said the blame could go in any number of directions. for some reason you think it can only go towards cal when it could easily go towards people in rose camp. theres zero proof that one person (other then rose) is responsible. so how about we put the blame towards where we know it actually should go…and thats derrick rose

Derrick Rose couldn’t even qualify after taking the SAT 3 times and he’s the mastermind of this operation? LOL…I think that if Calipari had nothing to do with this, he would’ve said something. Anybody would. Why would he never say anything if he wasn’t involved. It’s not a privacy matter anymore, because the case is closed. Why hasn’t he said anything in the aftermath of this to clear his name. That’s like a person believed to be a thief being put in jail for like 20 years and not saying anything even though in realityhe’s innocent.

ther has been blame on rose hs coach and a couple of other peopel but they didnt say anythign either. imagin trying to win a case in court with saying” well he didnt say anything there fore he must be the ,mastermind” sorry but it doesnt work that way. all of this is assumptions and guesses because if it was what happen then coach call would be in alllllot oftrouble. tampering with sat stuff liek that isnt something that is taken lightly. check out when shcea cotton mysteryously passed his sat and see how the coach didnt say he had anything to do with it. coach cal hasnt been accussed by anyone of improtance so why would he need to come out and say he didnt do it? ..i see you going at cal but how come youre not going at rose who cheated ont he tes with the same vigor?…so the guy who actually did the cheating is no longer the guy responsible. everyone says cal this but never mentions camby nor rose liek they were just innocent peopel that did nothign wrong. the only people asking him to say if he did it or not is you and some other fans so why would he have to answer to ya’ll?..many entertainers get accussed by fans on twitter and other sites but they dont answer fans either because the fans dont hold no real weight over them. now let it go to people who matter like the ncaa board or let a bunch of reporters sit outside his house asking him over and over and he doesnt answer then you have a point. on top of all that a lawyer will tell you not to answer even if a simple answer might not hurt you.happens all the time in life. ou dont answerjust because fans or regular peopel want you to. if they dont want to believe you fine because they/we dont really matter unless peopel start protesting. so of course you can think he cheated but the people who really matter like the ncaa an the ad that hired him and the ncaa peopel that investigated him and found nothing didnt prove he did so it doesnt really matter. hes int he exact same boat as his brothers( whoknow everything thats going on) his hs coach and parents. people who had much more direct knowldege of him cheating or not. yet i dont see anyone asking about why they cheated because we all know that they knew what was going on

I don’t know what all that stuff was you just typed….but I think Calipari has something to do with Rose and Camby getting in trouble. It happened twice with him and has a record of committing violations at these schools, he hasn’t done anything to clear his name, and even though all coaches probably do som dirty things, that doesn’t make it right.

the ncaa needs to change there rules because they are obviously dumb rules. i can imagin if coachs in the nba got fired or teams got a penelty for a player doing something off the court. “no nba playoffs for philly because of iversons antics or the free agent signing” fire the coach because thats who is responsible….so happy the nba isnt that way
