It seems there are so many problems with these new private academies popping up, I don’t know why a prospect would risk the potential eligibility issues.

It especially seems that these travel teams loosely associate to a micro institution is ripe with the potential for a scam.

I am not talking about what seems to be a systemic hassling of African players.  It is more "schools" that pop up out of nowhere and then people wonder how the kind got nine million credits in two years while travelling a national schedule.  Seems like a good way to sit out games.

by Marvin Bagley Jr, father of Bagley III, it was pathetic. "My son can’t play on national tv." "My son can’t play for a national championship." cry cry cry ect ect. Get your damn priorities straight man. Your son basically can walk onto any college program he wishes and as long as he develops in a normal rate, he is as assured a spot in the NBA as any player can be (we all know there is no such thing as a sure thing by now).

WHY DO YOU CARE ABOUT HS?!

Top level recruits need focus on the bigger picture, and by recruits, I mean recruits parents because these kids are just 16-18 yr olds. The adults around them need to do their homework and keep them in good standing. It’s not like we have a lack of Catholic schools and reputible private academies (Oak Hill, Findley, and Huntington type schools) availible as options.

Makes me wonder if some of these kids are getting paid to transfer to these sham schools. If you’re a top 10 recruit, you don’t need to go ANYWHERE, the scouts will fly in to watch you. They’re even flying up to Canada to watch Thon Maker. Work on your game and see the results!!!

You’re not getting at the crux of the situation.  Why can’t they compete for a national title? Why are they being turned away by nat’l TV coverage?  They are because the legitimacy of the academy is under scrutiny.  ESPN doesn’t want to shine light on a program that could turn out to be a total sham.

The problem with these academies as that they don’t want to be built the correct, legitimate way.  They want everything all at once.  Even as "start ups" they want the nat’l schedule and for teams with nat’l recognition to schedule them.  They want the the shoe company affiliation and all the perks that come with that, etc.  In order to get all that they have to entice big splash recruits.  Basically they’re just another means of exploiting children.  Just read up on Labissiere and all the shady sht that surrounded his prep career.  More than half of these things aren’t even real "academies."  There are no physical buildings.  There is minimal staff.  It’s basically an off-season AAU team.

it looks like Hillcrest IS trying to do things the right way. And make sure their players are getting what they need to qualify. Thing is, I also read somewhere that the Dick’s national tourney or ESPN or both put a one year probation period on these schools reguardless of the talent they have (to check for program validity I’m sure). They did the same thing to Findley Prep who clearly is doing this "sports academy" thing the right way.

So, it looks like Hillcreast is on the up and up and just have to serve their one year in national publicity purgatory. If the Marvins were just even a little patient, I’m sure they would of gotten all the national hs crap they wanted at Hillcrest next year.

Maybe they’ve learned their lesson, but the same people behind Hillcrest were behind Westwind Prep which was another startup that only lasted a year after it was found that their courses weren’t up to snuff which caused NCAA eligibility issues for its students.  They’re known for taking shortcuts and they screwed their students in the past.  Given their history, IDK why top recruits would join that program during its inaugural year.

The reason why they can’t compete for a "nat’l title" is because high schools, local high schools in particular, won’t schedule them.  One of the main reasons why local teams won’t schedule them is because they’re taking players out of the area, which established "academies" like Findlay do not in order to maintain a good relationship with the local HS’s. They wanted to have their cake and eat it too.  They expected to poach local players from top area schools, then turn around and try to schedule those same schools.  It doesn’t work that way.
